President to speak at 9am ...
Yeah, where is Old Jessie and Rev. Al?
Their oppressed minority needs them and they're no where to be seen.
What wastes of space.
Sorry about that.
Yes.
Bernie Kerik would have come off as more incompetent than the elected leaders in New Orleans, if that's possible. Having a great track record as a boot-licker in the NYPD is one thing, but his one foray into the real world (when he was supposed to be overseeing some kind of law enforcement effort in Iraq) was cut short without any real explanation.
My guess is that he quickly realized just how incompetent he really was in dealing with a situation in which more than 0.01% of the people in his jurisdiction actually carry guns.
Look, why don't you just go find a "zot" thread to amuse yourself on. That seems to be more your speed.
Can't really blame the feds for this mess, they did not create it and they are not the ones reponcible for cleaning it up, La/Ms/Al are, feds are suppose to play a backup role providing resources if local government requests it. The feds are not suppose to be the primary responder to a huricane. But they are suppose to be the primary responder to armed resistance in a wiped out American city, so where the hell are they? That is what is pissing the hell out of me, people dying on roof top in the hot sun because some gang bangers taking pot shots? That is totally unacceptable, get some real men in there and take the gang banger out fast.
Ultimately Bush will be judged by the results or lack of them in this disaster, not one set of comments or the other.
I do believe that is why he is going down there.
Sorry to disappoint you!
I nominate this for the funniest comment posted on FR in the last week!
There is nothing bigger than this storm. Not right now.
Nothing.
They are different situations and I dont think they should be compared.
We have never compared natural disasters to acts of war?
At least not that I remember.
"Get Al Sharpton and Jesse Jackson down there calm down the populace."
I HAD been saying the same thing for days now, unfortunately it sounds as if Jesse IS going to be there but will stoke things instead of calm things. If he was serious about his message he'd liquidate all his assets and buy up every bus between Chicago and NO to help out. I've been looking on the internet for used a used bus between Austin and NO I could get and drive over myself.
unfortunately, i am agreeing, but from a different perspective... the problem is that this 24/7 news cycle we have is frankly, too much. it shows whtais happening down there minute, by never ending minute... frankly, i'm not down there, as about 95% of those on this forum aren't down there. but, i can tell you the perception is that the "federal government" is not doing anything. and the point is, it doesn't matter if they could do more, or they couldn't do more... ALOT of people feel they should have...
i know i'll be on the recieving end of "what the hell were they supposed to do, it's the democrats that hold the gov. office, the mayor's office and blah, blah, blah..." the answer is, they probably couldn't do anything but THAT message is not getting out...
i'm fully confident that my President is going to kick some ass when he gets there, and that is the reason i love him...
my only criticism is (and i don't think this is arm chair quarter backing) is, for the life of me why there were not helicopters dropping leaflets with some kind of information, any kind of information on it... just saying, we see you and we are on the way, just so they didn't feel completely abandoned... and the, "they knew this storm was coming, why the hell didn't they get out?" crap is getting old... posters who posted that, congratulations, captain obvious applauds you... but, the bottom line is, they didn't and they need to be helped... along with leaflets, why there was no way to drop water for people also confuses me? that doesn't sound out of the realm of an attainable task, and the responses of "well, the scumbags were shooting at helicoptors..", yeah, I know, that was also Thursday morning when that was happening... this had been going on since monday...
Quite correct.

CRAWFORD, Texas - President Bush declared a state of emergency in Louisiana on Saturday because of the approach of Hurricane Katrina and his spokesman urged residents along the coast to heed authorities' advice to evacuate.
Bush, vacationing at his ranch, was being regularly updated about the storm, which is expected to hit land early Monday, White House spokesman Scott McClellan said.
Officials from the Federal Emergency Management Agency continue to coordinate with state authorities in Florida, Mississippi, Louisiana and Alabama, and have prepositioned supplies in areas expected to be affected, he said.
The president's emergency declaration authorizes the FEMA to coordinate all disaster relief efforts and to provide appropriate assistance in a number of Louisiana parishes, or counties.
Authorities told residents of low-lying coastal communities to head for higher ground. The storm was expected to strengthen as it crosses the Gulf of Mexico and could become a Category 4 hurricane with wind of at least 131 mph.
"We urge residents in the areas that could be impacted to follow the recommendations of local authorities," McClellan said.
Why, exactly? What would a speech to the nation have changed? You think the idiots who refused to leave and are shooting at police and rescuers would have changed their minds? You want him to give a speech before every hurricane from now on? "We will hunt those hurricanes responsible and bring to justice those countries which harbor hurricanes"?
Welcome to FR.
I would also expect that the President has some information about the massive numbers of dead people, something that is not yet being shared with the public. When the numbers come out, many will place further blame on Bush for this natural disaster. The Mayor of NO and the Gov of LA are complete incompetents, but will escape any media criticism because they are democrats.
Don't worry, they'll be there, as soon as they can find a TV camera that is outside of small arms fire range.
