28,000 National Guard troops are deployed to the disaster areas in Mississippi, Alabama, and to Louisiana, where SWAT teams are working to combat the looters and shooters in New Orleans. Additional 1400 National Guard troops are being deployed daily.

Shootings reported at a New Orleans hospital, rescue boats, and a military helicopter, while conditions continue to deteriorate at the SuperDome amid refugee deaths and chaos. Evacuation of New Orleans continues.

House Speaker Dennis Hastert has voiced serious doubts about rebuilding New Orleans with federal funds, while assuring the people of Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama and Florida that the United States Congress stands ready to help them in their time of need. New Orleans Mayor C. Ray Nagin issued a "desperate SOS."

Doctors at two desperately crippled hospitals in New Orleans called The Associated Press Thursday morning pleading for rescue, "We have been trying to call the mayor's office, we have been trying to call the governor's office ... we have tried to use any inside pressure we can. We are turning to you. Please help us," said Dr. Norman McSwain, chief of trauma surgery at Charity Hospital, the largest of two public hospitals.

The Port of New Orleans is now open to shallow draft vessels. Congress is reconvening in an emergency session. International offers to assist the U.S. have been received from Russia, Japan, Canada, France, Honduras, Germany, Venezuela, Jamaica, Australia, the United Kingdom, the Netherlands, Switzerland, Greece, Hungary, Colombia, the Dominican Republic, El Salvador, Mexico, China, South Korea, Israel, the United Arab Emirates, NATO and the Organization of American States.

Bush has to get the Governor on the phone and say, slowly and clearly, "I want you to request me to send in the military". And if she acts like she doesn't understand, he should repeat it as many times as is necessary.

Are you talking about the people at the Astrodome? They handed out clean clothes and a shower.

Then remember when you go to bed tonight that you aren't on the floor of the Superdome.

Yes, and they didn't have to be there either.

There were warnings. You know how I know that? More than 400,000 people heard the warnings and got the hell out of the city as they were ordered to do.

There was help to get poor people out of New Orleans. There was free transportation, FOR THE ASKING.

There were free food and shelters in safe locations, FOR THE ASKING.

Even a Greyhound bus ticket from New Orleans to Baton Rouge is $16. There were shelters waiting for the poor people who could make it to Baton Rouge.

A lot of good it does to warn people repeatedly about an impending, deadly hurricane if they are too dumb to flee.

Child,

God is moving in our land. The forces of darkness and of light are moving center stage.

In the faces you see are the children of God, and those who would destroy all of righteousness.

Many of us may be called to make a stand in the days to come Let us pray for those who, in their time of peril, help those who are weak and infirm.

The end of days finds us locked in a confrontation that has no middle ground. Choose the love and sacrifice of Jesus our Lord, for evil is very much with us.

MA

Judith, I never had an opportunity to say so, but I am so proud of your work. God bless you.

There has been a flight restriction over New Orleans since Monday, enforced by the US MARINES. Good luck.

I did hear ONE women yesterday saying she lost her job, her home, her city, but then added, "put me to work", "I'll do anything".

That is a good sign, I am sure it helps those victims to work and help others.

I know- I was wondering about that- isn't it time for the first crew to get rotated out? They aren't trained for this- you need to go through boot camp at Benning to prep for this duty.

That wasn't a crack, it is a fact.

They are all over the news saying they have no water and are dehydrating.
It is just being reported that they have rain, so THERE is the water they needed.

Plain and simple.
Use tarps to gather it and bottle it...

Did you see me state that they shouldn't cry.

You posted When I see people walking over the rubble crying over their lost items in MS I think they should THANK GOD they aren't in NO right now.

The statement seems to imply that you resent their sorrow. If I misunderstood your post I am sorry but I am not sure what you were referring to.

You also said

Crying over your windshield? Okay. Great. Then remember when you go to bed tonight that you aren't on the floor of the Superdome.

Someone else posted about the broken windshield.

I thank God I am not in NO – and pray for those who are – but I don’t see how that relates to people grieving in Mississippi.

More news from Alexandria:

It was just announced that all Rapides Parish public schools are officially closed tomorrow (Friday) because the school buses are being used to evacuate people from New Orleans to Houston. The Rapides Parish Sheriff's Office will be escorting the convoy to ensure the drivers' safety.

Here is a bulletin being distributed by a Rapides Parish public school, and the address where you can ship donated items:

Rosenthal Montessori Elementary School
1951 Monroe Street
Alexandria, LA 71301

Dear Parents:

Rosenthal Montessori Elementary is asking for things to help out of the people that have lost their homes in the hurricane disaster. There will be boxes at the front of the school each morning for you to drop off the goodies for the people in need. You can bring the following:

personal items
towels (all sizes)
toothpaste
blankets
toilet paper (lots!)
diapers
shampoo/conditioner
soap
deodorant
baby wipes
hand sanitizer
toys/books/magazines
medicines; ex. aspirin, Motrin, Pepto
notebooks/pencils
BOTTLED WATER

Anything you can do to help with this effort will be greatly appreciated!

Thank you,

Rosenthal Montessori Students, Faculty & Staff

Also in Alexandria, there is a telethon in progress which has raised over $13,000 so far for the Central Louisiana Red Cross. Donations should be specifically earmarked for the "American Red Cross - CenLa Chapter" so the money goes directly to the local refugee families.

Here are the numbers to call:

(318) 447-2542
(318) 447-2531

Thanks for caring!

The hosptial evacuated the NIC babies to Atlanta; the parents had not contacted the hospital, so they didn't have a number to use to contact them.

Yet another overhyped story.

Flint Michigan has quite a few empty houses. Of course, they may not be habitable. Maybe Michael Moore should conduct an evacuee bus trip.

"so all these people are stuck - with very little security."

Did you hear how much each one of those people paid to get those buses there? Not to mention the fact that they are staying in what was a nice hotel. Now, with that in mind, do you think there is any reason you wouldn't have found a way out of New Orleans with a Cat 5 hurricane coming your way assuming you had the means to stay in a nice New Orleans hotel before the storm hit, and pay thousands to try to charter a bus out after it hit? The night before the hurricane hit, people were being interviewed on Bourbon St saying they were sticking around for the experience. Well....they're getting it....with very little security.
