Katrina Live Thread, Part XIII

28,000 National Guard troops are deployed to the disaster areas in Mississippi, Alabama, and to Louisiana, where SWAT teams are working to combat the looters and shooters in New Orleans. Additional 1400 National Guard troops are being deployed daily.

Shootings reported at a New Orleans hospital, rescue boats, and a military helicopter, while conditions continue to deteriorate at the SuperDome amid refugee deaths and chaos. Evacuation of New Orleans continues.

House Speaker Dennis Hastert has voiced serious doubts about rebuilding New Orleans with federal funds, while assuring the people of Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama and Florida that the United States Congress stands ready to help them in their time of need. New Orleans Mayor C. Ray Nagin issued a "desperate SOS."

Doctors at two desperately crippled hospitals in New Orleans called The Associated Press Thursday morning pleading for rescue, "We have been trying to call the mayor's office, we have been trying to call the governor's office ... we have tried to use any inside pressure we can. We are turning to you. Please help us," said Dr. Norman McSwain, chief of trauma surgery at Charity Hospital, the largest of two public hospitals.

The Port of New Orleans is now open to shallow draft vessels. Congress is reconvening in an emergency session. International offers to assist the U.S. have been received from Russia, Japan, Canada, France, Honduras, Germany, Venezuela, Jamaica, Australia, the United Kingdom, the Netherlands, Switzerland, Greece, Hungary, Colombia, the Dominican Republic, El Salvador, Mexico, China, South Korea, Israel, the United Arab Emirates, NATO and the Organization of American States.

Excellent! There is a post back up, from I dunno, rb3 or someting like, that speaks well to the point that we reveal our real and true selves in times like these by our words. Anyone recall / have that post?

I tried a time or two, to ask us to consider that the lurid images are NOT representative of the vast majority, of all races that are in the shit together. And working the best they can to help each other. I garontee, when the whole story is written, we are going to see stories of heroic action and sacrifice.

Glad to hear you have made it so far. Where are you, if you care to tell.

yeah, he's taking her to task a little.

he ought to tell Landrieu point blank - call the governor and ask her to restore civil order.

Just heard a PR guy for the NO Saints that is here in the Dallas area...

He is going to San Antonio for a meeting tomorrow with all of the Saints people, in order to figure out what they will do...supposedly James Carville pleaded with them NOT to stop the season, and told them that the people of NO needed the games...

Also, they don't know yet where they will play their games...

The same station (sports) said that the Hornets are considering not having their team play at all this next season.(rumor)

Anderson Cooper is tearing Gov. Landrieu a new one on CNN.

"No one taking responsibility... when you politicans pat each other on the back and compliment each other, it angers people because I just saw a dead body being gnawed on by rats over there, there is no help here..."

Boy do you have that right. It seems like the Mayor was afraid to do anything because of the fear that he had no Authority and Blanco has no knowledge what to do and no guts or savvy to do anything. They hire their cronies that don't know anything and are worthless in a crisis and you have a mess. The Mayor looks and sounds nuts now, he went from Zombie to loonie. I might have flipped out also had I hesitated like he did and obviously caused a lot more people to die that should have been evacuated. He may have been given bad info, maybe by Blanco. They should have been one thought and then acted when GWB and the NHC guy told them to evacuate. It is very sad.

You know, the NOLA people said 25,000 would need evacuation, then 100,000 yesterday, then 250,000 today.

How can that be all of Bush's fault?
