The New Orleans police chief says 15-thousand people are trapped in the city's convention center. And he says some are being raped and beaten.
Chief Eddie Compass says displaced tourists are "walking in that direction and they are getting preyed upon."
Compass said he sent eight eleven-man teams into the convention center. But as soon as the first team arrived, he said, "they were beaten back within 30 feet of the entrance."
Earlier, the city's mayor issued a "desperate SOS" on behalf of the thousands who are stranded at the convention center.
He also gave the go-ahead for them to march across a bridge to a dry area of the city and look for whatever relief they could find.
He maintained that human beings were essentially good and equal in the state of nature but were corrupted by the introduction of property, agriculture, science, and commerce..... I would say that what you see before your eyes is the true nature of uncivilized people controlling the few civilized people left in a natural disaster.
Haiti anyone???
I don't think these people are the ones shooting.... but they don't control the streets coming into the area... the hoodlums do. They're trapped by the same hoodlums.
I just read it this morning. We'll probably be hearing a lot more stories like this.
On a "normal" day, they are not as concentrated together, and the police have better ability to get at them, so they behave better. What you're seeing is how the thugs become when they know they have the police outnumbered and cowed
A good reason for all law-abiding citizens to have firearms and a goodly supply of ammo -- because when it hits the fan, you WILL be on your own
>>Treme is the area immediately to the north of the French Quarter. Alot of tourists have made the mistake of going past Rampart Street, only to RUN back to the Quarter.
Only been there once, but my friends were staying in a small hotel just north of Rampart. They were walking back there after a fun night in the Quarter and a local told them to go back and catch a cab, or they might find themselves in the morgue.
The stories that will be told by the tourists being held captive in the convention center are going to be sickening. The media will try to censor what's really going on in there.
~sigh~ Very true.
I always tell my friends who visit to stay on the Beach, in Coral Gables/South Miami, or in the western portion of the county. The area from downtown up to the Broward line (east of Lejeune) has got to be the worst ghetto in the US (Liberty City and North Miami).
One of the TV channels last night followed a couple of policewomen who had apparently joined in the looting. When confronted, it was obvious that she was just part of those stealing.
If the inclination for the NO police is to join in, I can see why there are problems. This is probably why some of the first shots were toward police stations - to spook the cops into compliance.
So Bush is running the helicopter dispatch office? Those breeches are just now repairable because the water in NO has reached the level of the water in the lake. There wasn't any chance that they were going to actually stop a 200 yard breech with anything you could dump from a helicopter anyway. Once you started to close it the water pressure just increased blowing away whatever was dropped.
"Also, Rosenkreutz, perhaps you are not aware of the fact that thousands of people who WANTED to leave, couldn't."
It wasn't.
I would be disgusted also. I would expect better response from a cop. But then, the NO police force was once called the most corrupt police force in the U.S. So it is no surprise to me that a force that has cops who ignore a sexual assault would have cops who loot and back down from crooks.
Like using expensive helicopters to inefficiently drop sand bags in the levy breaks.
They need to use the choppers to drop in security squads and for rescue.
Use boats/barges/cranes and experienced contractors to repair the damn levies.
This is crazy...
We have these Third-World towns embedded inside our cities. Now we have in plain view the ugly secrets of lawlessness and violence of a typical "inner city."
I think I know what Chris Mathiews Screen handle is (see "To" above)
If this is a vision of thing to come, then (and I think it is for reasons I've posted in other threads) when we have a opportunity to make a statement that criminals will remember for years to come. But I would take real leadership to do what is right for the future of the nation and sadly we do not have leaders with the guts to send in Special Forces and start taking bad guys out.
I read in an article that the crime rate in NO is 10 TIMES the national average. That will explain a lot of what is going on. For a city that lives off tourism they have certainly shot themselves in the foot. No pun intended.
Just wait until it spreads.
