Live from the White House in the 7am EDT half hour of Thursday's Good Morning America, Diane Sawyer pressed President George W. Bush to respond to a series of liberal talking points, starting with how "people have worried that the National Guard is stretched too thin" with "so many overseas" in Iraq. Later, she demanded: "Do we have to make a choice, at some point, between what we're doing in Iraq and what is needed, right now, to funnel massive amounts of money" to the hurricane victims? She also wanted Bush to "guard against price gouging" and wondered: "Is this a time to call on Americans to simply pull back, not use the gas? Pull back and stay at home and save the gas for those who are in dire need." Sawyer forwarded how "some people have said that the oil companies, themselves, should simply forfeit some of their profits in this time of national crisis."

Dear Diane,
Shove it. Less than 1/10th of the US's total force is in Iraq.

Hey Sawyer, why don't YOU get off your prissy tush and go down there and do something? You got a hell of a lot more money than most Americans. Share YOUR wealth!
It seems to me that the MSM should consider forfeiting some of the profit they're making on this disaster.
Sorry, I have to agree with Diane. She should step up to the plate and stay home. Don't go into the studio until New Orleans is back up and running.
In other words, impose price controls? Yeah, those have always worked. (to the benefit of bureaucrats, that is)
Diane got her talking points memo from Hillary as she has already been opening her piehole and clammering for the Bush admin. to push for price controls. Do any of the media (except FOX news) think at all for themselves or is every news copy direct from the DNC and Hillary's office?
I saw that, briefly before I could dive for the remote: MSM at its very best! :-(
Lefty axiom #9: anything good that happens during a Democratic president's tenure, give him credit e.g. the sky is especially blue, but anything bad, must have been a subordinate's fault e.g. Waco, Somalia, and on-and-on
But anything bad while there's a Republican prez:
"Bush's fault". (And of course nothing good happens.)
(And I noticed there was no blame apportioned to the Crescent City or its feckless governor, `Huckleberry Hound')
Thing about journalists is they are basically lazy. It is easier to rewrite a DNC press release then actually DO their job.
I really don't know what the political fallout will be from this, but what I AM observing is who has a political agenda even in times of crisis and who does not. This includes conservatives as well as Liberals that are rapidly all getting on my list as despicable or fanatical in their ponderings.
Meanwhile the President is concentrated on rescue and relief and isn't one damn bit concerned with PR, and THAT is what is impressing itself on me as worthy of respect. Certain Governors not playing politics and ahead of this are gaining my respect rapidly. Politicians grandstanding are not. Talking heads and pundits who's only contribution is critique and critisism are showing me only one thing. THEY are not FIT to lead this country.
Some people are full of ideas regarding what other people should do.
fix the problem, not the blame.
You've known for several years that the US is going through a natural cycle of increased hurricanes.
You should have been investigating why the elected officials of New Orleans didn't insist that each New Orleans residence had to have enough lifeboats to save its inhabitants.
Owners of buildings should have been required, by the New Orleans housing code, to provide lifeboats for their tenants.
According to a pre-Katrina web page, New Orleans could not be saved from itself.
You might have saved some lives, if you had done real reporting instead of Bush-bashing.
Most of the floods of the 20th century have been due to sustained periods of heavy rainfall and hurricanes. Yet, as beneficial as this system is to the city, inevitably it will spell New Orleans' doom. The levee system that has been built along the river, coupled with the canal system to keep the interior of the city dry, prevent the land from being replenished by the annual spring floods. As a result, the land will continue to sink until eventually there will be nothing to stop the waters of the Gulf to rush back upon the fragile land.
In addition, the fresh water that is pumped into the brackish wetlands surrounding the city is creating an ecological disaster. When the Bonnie Carre Spillway is used in order to spare the city of New Orleans from floods, the consequences to the coastal estuary system is profound. As a result, in order to save itself from the waters surrounding it, the city of New Orleans is slowly destroying its own environment.
The final death knoll of the city may very well come from the river itself. Scientists and environmentalists know that the Mississippi is trying to change its course that will bypass the city in favor of the shorter route to the Gulf through the Atchafalaya basin. So far, the Corps of Engineers has prevented the river from doing this. But, one day, it will happen, perhaps following a direct hit from a hurricane. As late summer and early fall approach every year (hurricane season), New Orleans stands with the threat that it will lose its own lifeline. No canal system and no levee system will prevent the disaster that will follow.
Good morning, Soul Seeker (and Free Republic).
Yesterday, and at various times since early last year, I have openly wondered why I ever got involved in politics. The sorry-assed (yet predictable) attacks from linguini spined opportunists like Rahm Emmanuel, Frank Lautenberg, Diane Sawyer, and others that are bound to come, have answered that question for me.
If I live to be 100, I will spend my dying breath to campaign and ensure that no Democrat ever sets up residence at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue. My message to Emmanuel, Sawyer, Laughingberg and the rest: you and your party can go Leahy yourselves.
Excellent post.
How about this...the Federal government put a moratorium on the GASOLINE TAXES...you'd be AMAZED how low the gas would be!
