President Bush: "We are dealing with one of the worst national disasters in our nation's history." Push has appropriated vast federal resources to assist with the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina.
78,000 people are currently in shelters. New Orleans evacuation continues. 10,000 additional National Guard troops have been called to service.
Hospitals are running low on supplies, and public health concerns include water borne disease, poor sanitation, food and drinking water contamination and shortages, mosquitoes, carbon monixide poisoning from electricity generators, lack of childcare, and the special needs of the elderly.

Oh, listen, now Fox is saying "these are people who waited too long to leave."
BS, these are the people who REFUSED to leave.
"Has anyone heard anything from Waveland, Pass Christian, Bay St. Louis, or Picayune yet?"
I heard this afternoon that Waveland is gone. Nothing left but roofs.
I'm so sorry for you. You certainly are in our prayers.
I seem to remember during the 9/11 attacks on NY the fire and police had major communication promblems. This is a disaster over a much wider are and a much larger scale. Competent leadership would have realized long ago that satalite communications would be necessary in a major disaster. NO seems totally unprepared and inept to handle this situation. My hopes are that the US military are able to come in and take charge of this situation.
Yes, ma'am.
Goldblatt had a story a while ago where cops stole cars from looters and are using them for transportation since their cruisers were flooded out...
Canada has offered aid and says it's a blank check for more if needed. Japan's said similar, but they have also offered their own strategic oil reserves if needed.
If you know anything about Japan's oil situation, you know how significant *that* is.
There have been numerous eyewitnesses saying police are looting, along with firefighters.
America's bravest my ass.
blam checked in yesterday. He's fine with some damage
Wow, very inspirational. You ever thought about writing speeches for the President?
And the police ignored a woman whose husband was dying on I-10 in NO. They later told her to get the body away so it would not smell.
anyone know any thing of Gretna La.
That is all fine and dandy, but we have been on the scene in foreign countries with a more immediate response.
Well, the media could. They sure don't hesitate to criticize the President.
OK! Thank you.
They had a VIDEO on Countdown where the cops had a shopping basket and were going down the aisle taking whatever they wanted.
Grab a box of 100 toothpicks, and dump it out on a table. Now, the highest toothpick represents the I90 West highway, the only route out of NO, and every other toothpick represents a pick up location at it points, and where toothpicks cross represent both pick up and drop off locations. Now, if you can remember 250 possible pickup points, and can rattle of directions from any pick up point to every necessary drop off point to reach I90West in less than 10 seconds, you can talk about how that spokesperson failed.
No one at the top of a chain of command should know that off the top of their heads in a on the fly, fluctuating situation. They should be able to hand it off to a working group under their command, and get the info in a period of time not possible for on air 40 second interviews.
You sound condescending and out of your league.
japan is a real friend. Damn shame how it happened.
