President Bush: "We are dealing with one of the worst national disasters in our nation's history." Push has appropriated vast federal resources to assist with the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina.
78,000 people are currently in shelters. New Orleans evacuation continues. 10,000 additional National Guard troops have been called to service.
Hospitals are running low on supplies, and public health concerns include water borne disease, poor sanitation, food and drinking water contamination and shortages, mosquitoes, carbon monixide poisoning from electricity generators, lack of childcare, and the special needs of the elderly.

only two? of a world that owes "Old Glory "a lot
I Have FINALLY Figured it out...
DEMOCRATS, and probably the DNC, DO NOT want to make it appear as BUSH'S lifesaving operation, but their's. Mary L. just made a point to "Thank" Bush for his "Help" and to LET Larry know THEY were working hard!
How many are going to die because of this absolute incompetence?
"But the Bush administration cut New Orleans flood control funding by 44 percent to pay for the Iraq war."
One problem is that Louisiana would not allocate the matching funds required of ALL states accepting federal grants. This was money available for years.
Washington cannot do it all.
NN,
Did you see this graphic in this morning's paper about storm surge in our area.

Also, my Mom called and said something about Jeb Bush announcing there were limited supplies of gas in the state...have you heard that? I've looked for links but haven't found any.
Im not a woman but I'll put on my flame proof suit and say it ...the results of PC and affirmative action... I must say the female Navy Captain of the helicopter ship in the area on the news today sounded like a Captain...
"In my opinion, the time for optimism has passed. New Orleans did not dodge a bullet, New Orleans suffered a worst case doomsday scenario. But this is far far bigger than New Orleans alone.
By my count, America has lost not one city, but nine of them."
Your post is alarmist in the extreme. I have family in the Mobile area who live in one of the worst hit areas and who have been through numerous hurricanes. Mobile is not destroyed or even close to it.
Your post is alarmist in the extreme. True, the gulf states are a mess, and I don't want to minimize the scope of this. But you know what? People do pull together and they do figure out ways to survive. With the government's assistance or without it. It's usually your friends and your neighbors and your family that get you through a disaster, not FEMA.
"To: jeffers; Jim Robinson; BurbankKarl; glock rocks
jeffers, this is excellent. If you don't mind, I'm going to copy this to a mass email... "
Feel free, consider it public domain.
What "officials" are doing is that they have "sectioned" off the disaster zones. Rescue teams, different ones, are going into specific zones. Those being rescued in those specific zones will be "transported" to different, more than likely, EVACUATION CENTERS.
So, no. I'm not surprised the "official" couldn't supply the "answer". She'd have to ask: "Which Area, which disaster" first. The list (of zones, and plan areas) could be pages and pages long.
Then there are those not immediately in the flooded areas but on overpasses and elsewhere. Different plans to deal with them.
My prayers to all those trying to cope with this.
You and me both -- haven't heard a word from Hollywood, Jackson, Sharpton, etc. and the list goes on!
Bumping your post. I wonder if that should go on the CA message board...
We had yet another person claim today that in Mississippi, police and firefighters are taking part in the looting themselves.
In NO, a woman was shown by the body of her dead husband on CBS a bit ago.
She tried to get police attention yesterday to help him as he was dying, but the police didn't help at all or even acknowledge her.
Thanks for reminding me to recheck ours and rotate the bottled water.
"I am hoping the President does a longer address to the nation once the recovery and everything is done, like he did several days after 9/11....like today, his 9/11 address was short and to the point."
I agree with that...today was a "taking care of business" speech... After more time passes, a speech aimed more to uplift and inspire, as he did in National Cathedral after 9/11, would be a good idea. The ramifications of what has happened are going to be hitting people for weeks if not months to come.
Exactly.
Unlike most states who match dollar for dollar, Louisiana wanted the U.S. government to pay for it ALL. 100 percent.
Hmm, they wouldn't be under water if the Mayor had used them to relocate many of his car-less citizens. Those buses would be sitting in Baton Rouge, ready to be used again.
Is it true that the Clintons are vacationing in Hawaii?
I heard one of the people on I-10 and they said they came from the Superdome and had walked out.
the cops are doing some of the looting themselves if you believe eyewitness accounts.
The situation is incredible down there.
The wave right behind Lee is 91L Invest. It is expected to be a fish. The next wave, the one closest to Africa, is 92L. The models are jumping all over that one, and take it near the Leewards in 144 hrs as a hurricane. If that wasn't enough, the models are indicating some homebrew activity off the SE coast over the weekend that may move into the GOMEX next week.
