President Bush: "We are dealing with one of the worst national disasters in our nation's history." Push has appropriated vast federal resources to assist with the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina.
78,000 people are currently in shelters. New Orleans evacuation continues. 10,000 additional National Guard troops have been called to service.
Hospitals are running low on supplies, and public health concerns include water borne disease, poor sanitation, food and drinking water contamination and shortages, mosquitoes, carbon monixide poisoning from electricity generators, lack of childcare, and the special needs of the elderly.

Tropical Storm 12
They might do better deputizing some *honest* looking volunteers.
I don't think there is any law right now either -- martial law should have been put into effect the minute the looting started but nothing was done.
I told my husband that I was going to revamp our emergency supplies based on what I've learned from this storm.
Also I think every city should learn the lesson and supply key personnel in the city with satellite phones. In an emergency you can't count on the cells, radios, or land based lines.
Communication breakdowns, IMHO, is what is greatly contributing to the confusion.
When Shep asked that officer today where these people were supposed to go, I think the reason the officer didn't answer him is that the officers themselves are operating in a blank because of communication failures.
(Sigh) C'mon, you know that I am not criticizing most of the operation, but just the lack of communication to those large groups wandering and in the dome, and the slow response(for whatever reason) to get more of a military presence in there(which appears to be delayed by bureaucratic legalism.) It will be there by morning.
< What!!!!! These people left the SD because they did not want to go tp Huston????????? >
I think these people are too stunned to realize that they aren't going to be living in NO for a long time...if ever again.
This SOB needs another phone call from the president to remind him of his priorities.
I won't argue that point since I agree.
What I was pointing out is the total lack of positive leadership.
Maybe that will change.
However, keeping people totally in the dark causes lots of apprehension.
jeffers, this is excellent. If you don't mind, I'm going to copy this to a mass email...
glock, thanks for the ping. I would've missed it in all of the coverage.
Jim & Karl...pings.
that and there is only one media helo...
The area around the Salton Sea has repeated earthquake swarms, and that location had large swarms in 2003 and 2004.
They typically don't mean much.
There are actually some small volcanoes in the area, last erupted 16,000 years ago, which is real recent in geology, but none of these swarms previously have had anything to do with volcanism.
I heard a report last night that LA doesn't have law with the language regarding "martial law." But, that they can suspend civil liberties. I suppose it is all semantics.
Americans used to not show bodies out of courtesies to families.
Agreed. People here in Reno, NV (unless they are FReepers) have no clue what is going on. I talked to about 10 different people today and they all said things like....'oh only 55 people died'....or...'I heard the hurricane was so downgraded it didn't cause much damage.' I was astonished!
Someone opened fire in that line to get on the busses...its out of control.
For one, he shouldn't "corner on natl TV" some low-level cop and make people pissed off at all cops for "not helping."
It's not the wading trooper's fault there is no plan. Shep is helping foment anger at the cops instead of where it belongs: elected officials and looters.
Shep's cadre of fools in New York have better access to info than that poor trooper. Are they really interested in helping the situation, or a la Aruba-girl, are they just trying to sensationalize this into more viewer ratings? I'd have liked to have seen the trooper confront Shempie about his antics.
"SEND $$$ to the SALVATION ARMY"
Only to those not paying attention.
May have been another set of prisoners?
This Fox radio reporter named Lisa said NO let the prisoners go, and the inmates went crazy. They started banging on her car, and she thought they were going to throw her out of it and steal it.
I also think that was the mindset of the local officials and now they are overwhelmed. I think that is why there is so much confusion.
The look on the face of the lady in Charge of the state police was alarming. She was definitely a deer in the headlights, and she was in charge. When asked by the reporter where these people need to go she had no answer, nothing!
I think that's an excellent idea.
