President Bush: "We are dealing with one of the worst national disasters in our nation's history." Push has appropriated vast federal resources to assist with the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina.

78,000 people are currently in shelters. New Orleans evacuation continues. 10,000 additional National Guard troops have been called to service.

Hospitals are running low on supplies, and public health concerns include water borne disease, poor sanitation, food and drinking water contamination and shortages, mosquitoes, carbon monixide poisoning from electricity generators, lack of childcare, and the special needs of the elderly.

Hopefully some are being used to transport those in need.......however the news seems to be showing most walking.

Economic impacts of Katrina are still being determined. But things so not look rosy for Louisiana and Mississippi. The housing bubble has popped in New Orleans, most of Louisiana and neighboring Mississippi and several points north. Thousands are feared to be dead.

New Orleans turns into chaotic hell as people have no electric power, run out of food and water and begin looting. Flooding turns the city into a massive cesspool. Mayor says those evacuated may have to stay away for 12 to 16 weeks

In a way, I am not in agreement with the media censoring what they could be showing us. I think a stark reminder needs to be sent on the real cost of not evacuating. The images we should be seeing would shock us into reality on what a significant storm such as this can do. I'm not saying they should be showing us bloated bodies in a house, but just think about some of the images from 9/11 of people falling from the WTC and their impact on us. They remark about bodies everywhere, yet we must take their word for it. Maybe even confine it to afterhours with plenty of warning. I think it is important for us to have access to these images to get a grasp on the human cost, not just the property losses.

What you do first is call in the Feds

And with two days advance warning, you (local/state office holder) set your damned ego aside, put the welfare of your citizens ahead of party concerns, and request mobilization of Federal assets immediately it's apparent the storm's intensity/track will not vary significantly.

My father (rip) was an engineer w/the Feds and extremely competent and dedicated (even if, while growing up, I thought he was a prick ;-).

Yes, there are innumerable screwoffs working for all levels of government, but there are also, at least at the federal level, some of the arguably best trained and motivated people in their fields staffing the agencies that are set up to take charge when catastrophes like this strike.

Earlier today he pointed out a National Guard dumptruck bringing a whole truckload of bottled water onto the overpass. Then he closed his piece tonight by saying there has been no water on the overpass for days. I don't know if he's lying or delusional, but he sure as heck isn't reporting the truth.

That wasn't a water truck as he had first thought, because soon after it arrived people start climbing into it and loading up the sacks they were carrying.

But hey, the President is a Republican, so I guess we are supposed to ignore the bad things, lest we risk it in some way reflecting badly on him. I guess that I sometimes forget that this is a political website, but thanks for reminding me.

In 2001, FEMA warned that a hurricane striking New Orleans was one of the three most likely disasters in the U.S. But the Bush administration cut New Orleans flood control funding by 44 percent to pay for the Iraq war.

This is exactly the kind of spin I was expecting. And a FEMA report from 2001 means that they can blame Bush for months. Blame the war in Iraq for all of it.

I expect to see headlines on this in all the major papers before the end of the week. The script is already written on this one.

I'm high and dry..found out this pm family in Mandeville is ok, house damaged by fallen tree and all windows broken but all well.. Still worried about others in Slidell who has not been heard from, they were in the northernmost part least damaged but you never know..

Well, it makes more sense now how people got raped and how there are people going around with AK47's, shooting at cops. These inmates have nothing to lose.

Exactly, I find it unbelievable they were released...what happened to the story about the hostage and his family, could that be why the were released? Nothing else makes sense (that doesnt either)....Most guards know if they are taken hostage they are expendable...
