President Bush: "We are dealing with one of the worst national disasters in our nation's history." Push has appropriated vast federal resources to assist with the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina.

78,000 people are currently in shelters. New Orleans evacuation continues. 10,000 additional National Guard troops have been called to service.

Hospitals are running low on supplies, and public health concerns include water borne disease, poor sanitation, food and drinking water contamination and shortages, mosquitoes, carbon monixide poisoning from electricity generators, lack of childcare, and the special needs of the elderly.

Get real PKM. Of course there is a massive rescue underway, but there are even more refugees. Shep is exactly correct, turn on the TV and you can see all the people wandering on the freeway, no info, nowhere to go, so migrating west across the bridge, desperately wandering. There are 100,000 refugees just in New Orleans. 100,000, and only 25,000 of those are in the dome. Both sides of the story have to be told, and in fact it is imperative that the negative side get out so pressure comes to bear to resolve it. And indeed, it will be a completely different situation in the morning, much better.

But this is no place for sugarcoating, and failure to do so WILL cost even more lives. Not a cliche this time. Shep is only 1 part of the story, but it is a very sad and dramatic one.

Believe it or not, many of the military facilities are classified as substandard for housing civilians, but OK for the military. Your tax dollars at work.

We are all praying for you, mpackard. Thank the Lord your daughters are safe. We can't even begin to imagine what you are going thru. We pray that God will give you the strength, courage and faith to face each day and that hopefully help will be there soon.

Is that beer lessing filling or better tasting? Or should somebody shoot that guy?

One of the reasons looters need to be shot IMMEDIATELY is that before looting breaks out, only bad people are likely to start it. Once looting breaks out, however, even people who otherwise wouldn't dream of it start to realize that if they don't take whatever they can get as soon as possible it won't be possible for them to get it later.

Once law and order has broken down, it becomes almost impossible to tell good and bad people apart. That's why it's necessary to stop the bad people before the breakdown.

"Any evacuation plan MUST include contingencies for removing people who don't have cars. It is amazing to me that New Orleans, with a large poverty-stricken population plus several universities and a large tourist presence, had NOTHING in place for those people."

Yeah... like a freight train of empty box cars.

I know. We have to face that there are two lasses of people left in New Orleans: those who couldn't leave because of lack of cars or health reasons, and those who could leave but wanted to stay in order to loot.

I think you are right about an agenda. When I found out these people with Shep are from the Superdome that didn't want to go to the Astrodome, it meant he had to know the same thing and NEVER reported that fact.

Agenda from the media all the way around except the local media.

"Thought I was the only person on this thread considering Shep to be in the way. Thank YOU!"

I think ALL of the reporters down there are IN THE WAY unless they use their communications to get those in charge information about where help is needed. Thise Remote TV units are very self-sufficient with their own power and real time communications.

Shep WAS doing some good work there for awhile trying to get someone to realize there was some folks in dire straights at his location.

Now he is just there. They need to get more info out, hell get a damn flatboat and get some video intel of some of the folks trapped in those projects nearby and even take some out if they can get close enough.

Then they try to make something horrible that happens now seem like the worst thing that has ever happened in the history of man. Nothing is put into perspective.

Anything less than 100,000 dead is not historically significant.

I would think so but not sure if there are any bases vacant since the last BRAC was the middle of the 90's.

Martial Law has been declared in New Orleans -- what took so long.

You know, they had buses for the public schools left in a lot to flood. They could have loaded them up and moved them out.

How efficient the government is at collecting and processing confiscatory taxes. And how inefficient they are proving to be in actually doing the very things governments are supposed to do with the money they collect, like disaster relief.

I heard they declared "martial law." But it doesn't seem to me that there is any law of any sort in New Orleans.
