President Bush: "We are dealing with one of the worst national disasters in our nation's history." Push has appropriated vast federal resources to assist with the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina.

78,000 people are currently in shelters. New Orleans evacuation continues. 10,000 additional National Guard troops have been called to service.

Hospitals are running low on supplies, and public health concerns include water borne disease, poor sanitation, food and drinking water contamination and shortages, mosquitoes, carbon monixide poisoning from electricity generators, lack of childcare, and the special needs of the elderly.

I would think it is reasonable to assume that when a major city is supposed to be completely evacuated, some military contingent needs to be mobilized at the same time to prevent looting.

Recovery is being hampered because of people who don't care a wit about others, never have, never will.
Their greed and evil is causing the death of others in attics and on top of roofs.
If they survive they ought to be charged as accessory to murder to anyone still stranded that dies as a result.

Chris lawrence talking about conditions. People dying, dead bodies, an old woman in a wheelchair is dead up against the wall, filthy conditions, feces, no medicine etc.

Where is the plan, where is the help, etc.
This is inside the convention center I believe. No one in charge. No officials.

Of course the logistics are quite different...but it is disturbing to note that frustrating contrast.

And of course, after 9/11, it took the left three or four months to get back to hitting their anti-Bush stride!

Yep. Hindsight is 20-20. But obviously if you need to evacuate and entire city. While the people are leaving the Military needs to be arriving.

Most of the aid trucks I have seen have been Salvation Army. I am donating today. They are Johnny on the spot.

The following was forwarded to us by Bob & Mae Dark, whose friends Majors Johnson (the writers of the attached) are Divisional Officers in Mississippi. We know that you will keep this situation in your prayers...
W/CBR

Dear Friends,

Thank you for your prayers - your support in this way has been most effective. While the Lord has been faithful in protecting us from harm and danger, there has been a tremendous amount of "physical" loss within our Division - we are very, very thankful thus far, to know that lives within the Ranks of the Army have been spared.

As you have probably seen by pictures on the news, New Orleans has become a city under water. Our officers, Majors Ray and Faye Brittle, decided to stay in New Orleans to "ride the storm." Today they reside on the second floor of their building since the first level has been overtaken by water. They've distributed every ounce of food they had in their possession and are in despair and very discouraged as they have nothing more to offer. When we heard from Major Ray Brittle yesterday, he said, "there's absolutely nothing anyone can do for them at this time..." "...Unless we had a helicopter or a boat or two to bring in supplies, there's nothing that can be done." I have been praying for them all through the night and ask that you make a request of the folks around you to do the same.

In regard to Mississippi, there's tremendous damage. I can share with you, at this point, that the officers from Pascagoula and Biloxi areas fled their towns to safety with family members and will have absolutely nothing to return to. The Corps facilities and quarters have been completely wiped away. Majors Don and Helene Wildish were stationed in Biloxi and Sergeants Brett and Kim Cundiff were stationed in Pascagoula (this couple just recently "signed up" and were installed as Sergeants in July!)

We haven't heard reports from Alabama, due to phone restrictions in their areas and ours, so we're a bit anxious about what type of damage that's occurred there. As phone lines become stronger, clearer and free, we should be hearing more results of destruction today from other communities. We've dispatched canteens and kitchens, etc. to just about everywhere within the Southern regions of the division with the exception of New Orleans.

Please keep us in your prayers as we continue to ask the Lord for direction and wisdom in extending the best help possible to those who have been effected by the destructive hurricane/storms of Katrina.

Carefully and slowly read that sentence again. Do you understand exactly what you said? You're basically complaining that nobody predicted that a hurricane-ravaged American city could turn into a war zone. I wouldn't have predicted it. Would you have?

Indeed I do understand. If you search the hurricane threads over the weekend before the hurricane hit, many were predicting lawlessness among whoever survived the predicted flooding. And we didn't have any great insight, it is predictable in a disaster of this scale. Estimate are that 400-500,000 chose to ride out this storm in the New Orleans area.

Just imagine how well the plans will work on the ground when this is a biological, chemical, or radiation attack against a major city. Those plans better include controlling civil disorder better than the NO democrats' plans for hurricane aftermaths.

No kidding. This is pattycake compared to what will happen if there is a major attack on Philadelphia or Detroit.

Don't think the terrorists aren't watching this either. Now they know that if they can shut down a city's health, transportation, and water systems, they can let the gangbangers take care of the rest and the city will crumble.

True. But the issue is scope. Isolated looting is one thing, and that's probably what they were expecting. This sounds like (though it may not really be) something a lot bigger than "normal" looting.

At any rate, I think a bunch of disaster plans are going to be changed to account for the magnitude of looting in NO and other affected areas.

Someone had a list they were making of Freepers willing to open their homes up to those who have none. I, myself, signed up. However, I heard today that these offers are being made but that they want them all to stay as close to their area as possible. It was something about them having access to temporary funding. Still, it looks to me like any place could have a FEMA office to deal with this.

I agree. We need to open our homes to these people. Man, there would have to be some cautious screening though. If someone showed up at my door with a plastic bag full of unwrapped DVDs and CDs and a still boxed iPod ...well, I'd wonder.

Mississippi Power update

Mississippi Power energized an esential 50-mile section of transmission lines that serve the southern portions of our area Wednesday, according to a press release. Power has been restored to about 14,000 of the company's 195,000 customers, mainly in Meridian and Laurel.

More than 4,000 workers are here, with another 1,000 to arrive shortly. More than 700 miles of lines are on the ground. At least 4,500 poles need replacing and thousands more need reparing. Estimates are that nearly 70 percent of the company's facilities suffered significant damage, especially in the Coastal and Pine Belt region.

They request folks stay off the road to help repair crews be able to get around.

Customers who see dangerous situations should call (800) ITS-DARK (800-487-3275).

Hancock Bank branches

Hancock Bank has branches open now:
Cowan Road at Pass Road, Gulfport
Crossroads at I-10/US 49, Gulfport
Downtown Ocean Springs
East Pacagoula on Highway 90
Diamondhead

They say they have ample cash and tellers, but won't have ATMs for a while.

Peoples Bank

Outsiders, please help us get information to us Coastians. We post this knowing that nobody's got internet access here, but if friends or family call you, you can relay this stuff back in. Calls go out, but they can't get in. (Sounds like a Raid commercial, eh?)

This one's about Peoples Bank. It will be open today, noon-4 p.m. and again Friday, 9 a.m.-4 p.m. They hope to resume normal hours Tuesday, and they're accepting deposits and cashing checks only.

The following locations are open:
WEst Biloxi Branch on Pass Road, Biloxi
Cedar Lake Branch on Popps Ferry Road, Biloxi
Main Office on Lameuse Street, downtown Biloxi

Other branchss will open when they can.

All employees who haven't contacted the bank are urged to do so. Call Jackie Henson (435-8205) or the employee hotline (435-8419). If you can't do that, contact a co-worker and pass the word along.

Fatality update

According to Joe Spraggins, Harrison County's Emeregency Management director, here is an update on fatalities in the area:

Harrison County: 56 (as of 7 p.m. Wednesday)
Hancock County: 17
Jackson County: 10 (Communications shaky, tentative number)
Pearl River County: 17 (Communications shaky, tentative number)

News blurbs

As of 10 a.m. from WLOX and radio reports:

-- Gulf Coast Rescue Mission, one block north of WLOX and the Sun Herald on DeBuys Road, has clothing to give our. They have a walk-in freezer and can hold perishable items for people. They are receiving food (canned and perishable) and money to hand out.

-- Humane Society is under water. Animals are crowded in the ruins and need food and water. The new shelter on US 49 looks good, although it's not been completed yet. They may move some animals there. They need volunteers.

-- Stennis Space Center personnel call (831) 656-4327. If you can't, report to the Naval Oceanographic Office.

-- Rich Westfall from the Isle of Capri Casino says the first priority for employees is to take care of youself. There's extensive damage throughout the property, but it's one of the few that stayed in place. Call (800) 843-4753 for updates.

Are you watching how Houston is handling the evacuees? How they are prepared and handling this so much better than New Orleans officials?

Yes. Didn't the judge running it say on O'Reilly last night -- explaining how they moved so fast -- that they were basically using longstanding plans developed in case a catastrophic hurricane hit Galveston again?
