President Bush: "We are dealing with one of the worst national disasters in our nation's history." Push has appropriated vast federal resources to assist with the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina.
78,000 people are currently in shelters. New Orleans evacuation continues. 10,000 additional National Guard troops have been called to service.
Hospitals are running low on supplies, and public health concerns include water borne disease, poor sanitation, food and drinking water contamination and shortages, mosquitoes, carbon monixide poisoning from electricity generators, lack of childcare, and the special needs of the elderly.

You know were is Janet Reno when you really need her?? (sarcasm)
Exactly. Most of the perps are black, but then again so is the mayor, the police chief, and most of the police. The cop I saw yesterday with the shotgun trying single-handedly hold back a horde of looters was black. If he a blasted a couple of them what are the going to cry? Racism?
Glad to help.

In a sign of growing lawlessness, Tenet HealthCare Corp. asked authorities late Wednesday to help evacuate a fully functioning hospital in Gretna after a supply truck carrying food, water and medical supplies was held up at gunpoint

what do you mean, has no merit? there are plenty of reports today about these thugs taking shot at boats, buses, helicopters. are those all lies?
I didn't say it has "no merit," I said that you and I don't have enough information to determine whether or not there's any merit to the idea. We don't know, for example, whether the shooters are concentrated
enough, or obvious enough, or numerous enough, to be amenable to a "shoot them by the truckload" solution.
The media reports about shots fired are probably true -- but we (you, I, and anybody else on this thread) lack enough information to get any sense of the scale of the problem, or the area over which it's
spread."
I'd take exception to that, but only about a third of what I have has been corroborated by the MSM. Personally, since the corroborated stories are from the same source as the uncorroborated ones, I'll take them to the bank, hence my continuing presence here after 25 straight hours, but with FReepers getting the boot for "speculation", I'll let it pass...for now.
I thik what you may not be seeing is the exponential curve, unfolding over time, approaching, if not surpassing the "knuckle".
My heart goes out to that dog on the roof and all the other animals in this tragedy as well as to the people.
I have noticed that we haven't heard much about banks being looted. I don't know anything about safecracking other than what I see in the movies. I suppose the thugs might need some electricity for tools to drill into it or something.

Q.3. Why only Category 3 protection?
A.3. That is what we were authorized to do. [Answer by the Corps of Engineers]http://www.wwltv.com/local/stories/083005cccawwlunwatering.45718845.html
Um...don't give the bad guys any ideas. This would be a wonderful time for something to go boom...and I'm flying on 9/11...I'm not paranoid about it, but being realistic, anything to raise the chances of something happening is a bad thing.
Did anyone else see the header on FNC that the troops in Iraq who are from LA are being sent home? Or did I imagine that?
Good morning - just got on thread. Don't know if anyone mentioned it, I saw last night (actually early this AM before I went to bed) that there are a group of people at LGF who have connections and can get supplies. They are running medical/vet items (along w/generators, etc.) to a MASH unit stationed in LA.
It's not "ALL," and it would only take one or two shooters to shut anything down. Again: you and I simply don't know enough about the real situation. Nor, might I add, do you or I know what's being done in response, other than what the MSM tells us (late and unreliable), or what our own scanner-watchers are saying (hard to interpret, as the calls are explicitly local: no big-picture info provided).
Other states in the area either got screwed themselves or simply do not have the ability (or tax base) to deal with so many people. Texas has the space, the money, and the ability to deal with a major city evacuation or two. We have *lots* of open space that can be used, and our armed populace is useful for keeping people in line.
You know as the owner and lover of golden retrievers, that is one picture I can't stand to see.
Why you ask? Because shelters won't take pets. so the poor thing is going to die.
steve harrigan reported first hand on the attacks on the small boats tryng to launch rescues. Harrigan is at the end of I-10E (at the edge of the flood) interviewing the boaters.

Isn't that the truth!
