President Bush: "We are dealing with one of the worst national disasters in our nation's history." Push has appropriated vast federal resources to assist with the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina.
78,000 people are currently in shelters. New Orleans evacuation continues. 10,000 additional National Guard troops have been called to service.
Hospitals are running low on supplies, and public health concerns include water borne disease, poor sanitation, food and drinking water contamination and shortages, mosquitoes, carbon monixide poisoning from electricity generators, lack of childcare, and the special needs of the elderly.

Tropical Storm 12
Sounds like things they DIDN't want to get out about Superdome conditions are starting to be told...
You may be right about the scumbags. But not everyone who is a refugee is a scumbag. And some are just, I guess the best word is inadequate. Some are sick, some are old, some are having bad times. And some have been going to work every day of their lives doing menial work. Some are barely making it working class. Any who have families and a place to go will make out okay. But some of those people have never been outside of NO and haven't the slightest chance to adapt.
But some will want the lottery. I was asking why that mattered. They aren't going to get it.
I didn't realize it was all the NFL. I live in Norman, OK, so whether it goes to SA or LA is the same for me -- I am Cowboys fan although the Saints have one of our OU lineman from last year in Jamaal Brown who I am sure would rather be in SA then LA since he is from OK.
And I will disagree with you. Shep was responsible for getting authorities there to help these people. My hat is off to him!
Can you say liberal screaming hissy fit? The sinawhore from LA has already been blaming The feds and crowing about how they better get more then NY got.
Washed Away.
SOmeone mentioned at work today that the design had already been made but never implemented.
Hey cajungirl, glad to hear you are OK. My Father in Law is in Lutcher, we just spoke to them, they are OK (even have power).
I am stunned at this tragedy. May God have mercy on us all.
Regards, Ted
I too was wondering why they don't use schools as evacuation centers? It seems like a decent city plan would include people from certain parts of the city going to certain schools that are predesignated as evacuation locations.
"People who had followed the advice to evacuate and driven themselves -- obviously couldn't afford shelter themselves -- are being turned away from the Astrodome because they're not the "right" evacuees. "
There are several other shelters already set up for refugees in Houston, and they'll likely be much more comfortable in them. Everyone is tired and frustrated at this point, and there is much understandable confusion. However, if evacuees need a place to stay, they just need to keep asking where shelters are until they find the people who know. Texans do want to help.
Dallas' Reunion Arena is also set up as to take folks from New Orleans, and they've got space.
Don't know....I was asking too.
I meant...are there armed guards in the Astrodome in Texas? I hope there are National Guardsmen there making their presence FELT.
I KNOW there are looters & thugs running/swimming around New Orleans, stealing boats from rescuers & waving AK47s.
Thats the way I feel.
Would try to help as long as I possibly could.
Absolutely. They can come here to California. I mean as it is we got billions to provide schools and public assistance to every illegal immigrant that makes it across the border, so what? We can turn away our countryman when their city gets obliderated.
In a move of a franchise it usually isn't. At least it hasn't been in the past. But, I know the NFL wants a team in LA. That's the next and only market they do want. A move usually requires a vote of owners and I just don't see them letting Benson move to San Antonio.
Was it on the local channels? I didn't see it. The reporting the other night by Jeanne Meserve on CNN had me in tears, as does the footage on every station.
Yes, I saw all that. I thought that was admirable.
I just found out tonight that Dallas has 1000 at Reunion Arena. Don't know how they got here or when or if it's FEMA. People are calling local radio and offering to sponser families in their homes.
Wonderful news Ted....More answered prayers.
