Automatic weapons, sawed-off shotguns..(NO)
MS-NBC | 08/31/2005 | self

Posted on 08/31/2005 4:22:53 AM PDT by pageonetoo

I was listening to the news, flipping through the channels, and rested on an MS-NBC reporter talking about the unrest, and looting, in New Orleans.

The, he started talking about the "automatic weapons", and "sawed-off shotguns", that were being displayed, and that these were PERSONAL WEAPONS of the LEO's.

I didn't now it was legal for them to be owned, by LEO's. If this is true, why can't I have them, too?

Pay the 200 dollar tax go through the back ground check finger printing ect and you to can own one.

I would not count on a reporter to accurately desiribe a saw off shot gun most likely they are the standard riot guns any body can own

Remember, most reporters are firearms-illiterate. A lot of the "automatic weapons" and "sawed off shotguns" are probably civilian-legal semiauto AR145's, or shotguns with minimum (18 inch) length barrels.

Of course, an LEO could legally own a real sawed off ("entry") shotgun or full auto rifle if they were willing to deal with the hassles of getting BATF permission.

By the way, if I'm not mistaken that's an Ingram MAC 10. Sinister looking, but not very practical. I've fired them, and it's like shooting a shoebox with a trigger. If I were in a riot area I'd much rather have a shotgun...

Most reporters wouldn't know the difference between an automatic and seni-automatic if you gave them a dictionary.
These reporters are just trying to stir-up trouble as usual.

You CAN get automatic and sawed-off shotguns if you want to go through the trouble of paperwork, fingerprints, and background checks. And even after you own them your actions are looked at under a microscope.

I'd bet the "sawed off" shot gun has a legal barrel and pistol stock.

I know. I went through the gauntlet to get a CCW permit. It's their microscope that I don't want. I don't want folk looking over my shoulder!

I am so sick of the do-goders, who make laws against the rights of us "ordinary" people. .08, gun laws, and the most intrusive assault on personal liberty, "click it, or Ticket" BS. The gum't is not "for the people", these days...

I am also sick of the supposed conservatives on this site, who commend the police, and poopoo those who criticize the actions of their "rogue" elements. The WOD lovers, who regularly salute, when one of theirs get killed, but look the other way, when an innocent life is taken, in the pursuit of their adrenalin "buzz".

God help the people in the devastated areas... They are now being subject to lawlessness, and the cops who allow it be done! They are the ones who need the shotguns!

You can own them. The transfer/ownership of Select-Fire Firearms ("machieguns"), suppressors, short-barreled shotguns, and short-barreled rifles are regulated by the National Firearms Act of 1934. Further the Gun Control Act of 1968 banned the importation of select-fire weapons for civilian ownership followed by the Firearm Owners Protection Act of 1986 which banned the domestic manufacture of select-fire firearms for civilian ownership. Manufacture of suppressors, SBSs and SBRs is still allowed for civilian ownership.

Basically if you have the patience to go through the process and the budget to buy select-fire weapons and can legally own a gun you can absolutely own them.

To give you a quick overview of what this will cost you just for the gun:
Mac 10/11 (What you posted a picture of): ~$2-3k
Uzi: ~$7-9k
M16: ~$10-16k
MP5: ~$14-16k
Thompson (Tommy Gun): ~$16-25k

And they just go up from there

All a cop needs is a letter from his boss authorizing him to buy a NFA weapon. And he can buy a nontransferable weapon for a few hundred dollars. We peasants can only buy transferable NFA weapons which have a scarcity premium on their price.

For more details, contact the BATF.

How did they know these were personal weapons? Because they think the police don't have them? Why would cops bother with all the red tape when the department probably outfitted them with the firepower? I'd imagine if they didn't have the automatic weapons in their patrol car, they got them out of the station armory. Given what's going on there, having the weapons available to LEO makes sense.

Wait until the kvetching starts about the armed National Guard soldiers at every intersection. That's what happened here in Florida last year. Phone calls to talk radio and letters to the editor saying how intimidated people felt, how they hoped the guns were unloaded or that the soldiers Barney Fifed the bullets in their pockets. Disgusting. I was reassured that there was a visible presence. I'll bet those hand-wringers would change their tune in a heartbeat if we had the same breakdown of civilization.

This design was intended to fire from an open bolt in fully automatic mode. It's barely reasonable for that purpose and a total loser as a single fire weapon. I have fired them too, a Beretta pistol with a thirty round mag would be better (LOTS better).

About an hour ago on the local "All news, all weather, all the time" radio station [WHIO Dayton] the reporterette said two things that stuck in my mind:

--"The city is suffering from an increased looting and violence as people are struggling to survive..." {Oh shades of, "Escape from NYC"]

--"...kalashnikovs (sp?)were fired into a police station with the shooters running into the Super Dome." (Delivered in a very breezy, eye-on-the-clock-before-next-commerical-is-due, reporterette tone of voice.

Incredible! Thank goodness for FR!!

And just as a general comment - most folks, including LEOs (and I was one and know them well) don't really have the skill for an automatic weapon. I have some experience firing them, can accurately crack off 3-5 round bursts on target and I don't think I have the skill to use one properly.

You can get a 10 round combat shotgun with laser sights and all kind of whiz bangs for a whole lot less than you would spend for the cheapest POS fully automatic weapon. Besides that, it would be legal without the microscopic anal probe that the Gubermint would visit upon you.

You can own machine guns and sawed-off shotguns - you just have to pay for the license. Predictably, cops have an easier time getting these than regular folks. And some of 'em have a greater interest in owning such - sort of an extension to their work.

My understanding is that the DEPARTMENT can buy non-transferables, the department can't just give an individual officer a magic letter to buy one as a personal item (they have to go through the same process as us peasants)

I personally own a Sendra Registered Receiver (M16) and I paid that premium price but it's all worth it.
