With conditions in the hurricane-ravaged city of New Orleans rapidly deteriorating, Gov. Kathleen Blanco said Tuesday that everyone still in the city, now huddled in the Superdome and other rescue centers, needs to be evacuated.
"The situation is untenable," Blanco said, pausing to choke back tears at a news conference. "It's just heartbreaking."
The breach of two levees Tuesday meant the city was rapidly filling with water and the prospect of having power was a long time off, the governor said. She said the storm also severed a major water main, leaving the city without drinkable water.
"The goal is to bring enough supplies to sustain the people until we can establish a network to get them out," Blanco said.
FEMA is considering putting people on cruise ships, in tent cities, mobile home parks, or so-called floating dormitories, boats FEMA normally uses to house its own employees, said Coordinating Director Bill Lokey.

Actualy 1 million WAS ecacuated in 24 hrs, so 1,4 million COULD be evacuated in 60 hrs (that exactly how much time they had).

You obviously don't know what happens to a building once the drywall and insulation gets soaked. The skyscrapers can be saved, the homes can't.
Right. But the cost of those skyscrapers is the biggest of all. Would they really leave just the skyscrapers and put the rest of the city 15 miles away?

This reminds me of the fall of Baghdad. We let the people "loot a little to let off some steam" and that taught them that to be lawless is OK. It led to MAJOR looting , even of art museums and banks.
It was a major mistake not getting armed troops in there early and declaring martial law at the first sign of looting--one or two shot by troops would have put a stop to the looting.

These cruise ships will be destroyed by the looters and the floatsam and jetsam of society that make up the people who WANTED to stay behind, just so they could loot. Carnival and Royal Carribean and others better be prepared to sue to recover the millions of dollars of damage if they are forced to do this.

Has anyone calculated the cost of rebuilding a city of 1.4 million (which is essentially what we have w/metro area and towns like Metaire)? Think not only buildings...but water...sewer...roads...highways...all that?? I mean, insurance will cover a large portion of that, true.
Any way they can move parts of NO further north? lv French Quarter, business district but MOVE RESIDENTIAL further north? This could happen again and who's going to insure residential after this?

I would suggest people donate through their companies whenever possible. Most major corporations offer matching funds to the dollar for charitable donations. Find who's collecting money for relief efforts, then file for a match through your employer instead of sending to the agency directly.
