With conditions in the hurricane-ravaged city of New Orleans rapidly deteriorating, Gov. Kathleen Blanco said Tuesday that everyone still in the city, now huddled in the Superdome and other rescue centers, needs to be evacuated.
"The situation is untenable," Blanco said, pausing to choke back tears at a news conference. "It's just heartbreaking."
The breach of two levees Tuesday meant the city was rapidly filling with water and the prospect of having power was a long time off, the governor said. She said the storm also severed a major water main, leaving the city without drinkable water.
"The goal is to bring enough supplies to sustain the people until we can establish a network to get them out," Blanco said.
FEMA is considering putting people on cruise ships, in tent cities, mobile home parks, or so-called floating dormitories, boats FEMA normally uses to house its own employees, said Coordinating Director Bill Lokey.

Governor Blanco is without one iota of a brain. However, since she was elected by the looters that are now robbing property at will, the people of New Orleans and Louisiana deserve all that happens to them. They had a chance to put Bobby Jindal in the governor's seat and they blew it big time. As for the "not too bright" Mayor of N.O., he just about makes idiot status. I heard he was out campaigning for votes among his "looter" Democrat voters.
How that guy keeps his job is beyond me.
Anyway, the prisoners were not far from the Super Dome.
POLITICS BE DAMNED!!!! New Orleans has been a part of the US before it was even a country. It has survived storms, fires, epidemics, the Civil War & annual Mardi Gras invasions. The Big Easy is not the buildings or the levees it's the people who live there. They're not giving up & neither should we. Rescue recover & rebuild. God bless them and all the Gulf coasters who were effected.
Amen.
In Asia for the Tsunami, we sent our armed forces personnel and equipment. We made drinkable water, on ships.
NO is an American city of 484,000 people.
It seems to be within the scope of the doable, inspite of democrat mayoral tears.
"Overwhelmed with emotion" seems to be an all-to-frequent response by democrats, these days.
If she can't handle the job (and I doubt she can) there are others who can. In uniforms.
I really am heart sick for the people of New Orleans, Mississipi and everywhere else there is flooding.
This whole event transcends politics and we should all help those in need.
I read that the Super Dome is now flooding. Is that not the case? How far above sea level is it built?
Wow! You answered your own question on so many levels!
Paraphrase: 'I'm going to get flamed, so I'm going to throw in a fire-bomb and walk away!'
LOL! ;-) It's not that bad, but still..
Look at your screen-name! What happens to a garden when it goes un-tended? Weeds sprout...and maybe you get TooManyGrasshoppers! Just ribbing you.
Anyway...if you are really interested, I think what has happened with FR is that it went from a presumption of "I've got a question I expect to discuss over several posts" to "I've got the correct viewpoint, I stated it in #2242323, and if you don't get it...."
I think if you care about the posters here, then you will try to convince them over time. If you don't care about a certain poster.....ignore them!
Yes, of course. Because 52% of Louisiana made a dumb choice at the polls two years ago, they now deserve to have their homes looted and their lives destroyed.
Brilliant logic. Thanks.

I understand that the Some was built on a 30' mound - should be okay
On the subject of politics:
I agree that this is not the time to go after the Governor and Mayor on political grounds.
But I feel obligated to point out that it was Governor Blanco that first politicized this by blaming Bush for sending the National Guard to Iraq and that even CNN says there is not a shortage of Guard troops.
The kooks are definitely out in force tonight. ><
This is a tragedy of unimaginable proportions.
I said that I expected to be flamed and walked to the other room to put on my asbestos suit. As you can see from posts above, I returned and responded to replies. What I want to know is how did you know that my garden was untended and full of grasshoppers? LOL Thank you for your advice.
This is an admirable attitude. But N.O. just might be the first U.S. metro casualty in the long term rise in sea level. Not today. But the situation is only going to get more perilous. At some point reality kicks in.
Many GREAT coastal cities have been reluctantly abandoned to the oceans throughout history.
"the people of New Orleans and Louisiana deserve all that happens to them"
Dude, think about what you posted.. you don't really mean that do you?
Ever heard of the "Emergency Powers Act"?
Amen, bro.
