Governor: New Orleans Needs to Be Evacuated Tuesday, August 30, 2005
BATON ROUGE, La. With conditions in the hurricane-ravaged city of New Orleans rapidly deteriorating, Gov. Kathleen Blanco (search ) announced late Tuesday that people now huddled in the Superdome and other rescue centers need to be evacuated.
"The situation is untenable," Blanco said during a news conference. "It's just heartbreaking."

I know, Ive run into him before. It's just difficult when you see someone not thinking things out to a conclusion.
Blanco reminds me of Edith Bunker of All in the Family with some of her comments. She is so far over her head that she would be better off to resign immediately and turn it over to the Lt Governor who couldn't be any worse.
As for the Mayor of N.O. -- words defy what I think of him for not ordering an evacuation sooner than Sunday morning.
last year when the President showed up in Florida after a hurricane and was handing out water, people complained that he should not have been there...was just in the way with all his secret service guys...so they complain if he shows up and they complain if he doesn't so guess he should just do what "he" feels is the right thing to do and the heck with it...remember he is NOT Clinton (thank the Lord).
Blizzard of 82 in Denver for me. However, that was nothing compared to this. :-(
Dane,
I know you get off on the personal attacks. Do you have anything to add to the discussion, or do you just like to listen to yourself?
The President will be in NO and the surrounding area when it is safe for him to do so without interferring with search and recovery. Your lack of knowledge of a Presidential visit and what it takes is telling. The Advance Team was put in place yesterday and when they decide it is okay for him to visit, he will.
did you see how they trashed the SuperDome last time? Walked away with everything in sight. I'm not sure a cruise ship would survive the onboard looting, but a brilliant solution, otherwise
Coming back from the rally in Crawford, everywhere we stopped to eat, they asked us if we were coming from Louisiana, they had had so many stopping to eat. We told them we were headed to La. They looked at us like we fell off a turnip truck.
How will people live, if they are out of work for months? What happens to all their bills? Will they get late charges?
Maybe it's just republican presidents that they complain about if they go or if they don't go...just like there are only homeless people, old people eating canned dog food, yada yada yada, only during a republican's presidency :) Oh and also no anti-war protests unless a republican is the president...
That's probably true, but what are they supposed to do with their current passengers? Leave them in a foreign port? Drop them in the GOM in lifeboats?
One of the big bridges is somewhere in the water so to bring any ship in would be dumb. That's why they are holding barges in Iowa -- they don't know what the condition is downstream.
Liberalism made New Orleans below sea level, and made the levees fail?
Some of you make it sound like there it is a piece of cake to bring in a ship. Don't you all realize that before any ship comes up the Mississippi, they will have to know what is in the water like bridges that fell, etc.
That's actually an extremely interesting point. Just think of all the thousands upon thousands of drug-addicts who are being forcefully weaned off of their addictions as we speak. I hope some of them take advantage of that.
