The situation in New Orleans continues to deteriorate due to rising water levels and desperation. Search and rescue continues via boat and air. Authorities have announced the goal to evacuate all the remaining residents of NOLA. The New Orleans Mayor has reported numerous gas leaks throughout the city. Sporadic fires occurring. Attempts to evacuate hundreds of hospital patients from Charity Hospital and Tulane Medical Center are in process. Patients are being transported to other hospitals as far away as Florida.

The Army Corps of Engineers is at the NOLA levee breaks with current plans to drop 3000 lb sand bags in an effort to stop the flow of water. NOLA hospital evacuations continue for thousands of patients. Reports indicate all evacuees are being taken to the SuperDome, which is now surrounded by water. The generators at the Dome are now in jeopardy. The Governor of Louisiana has called for a day of prayer tomorrow...

Elsewhere, search and rescue continue in Mississippi and Alabama. Biloxi reports indicate catastrophic damage.

There may be some screw ups along the way, but we are dealing with rescue personnel who, at this point, are already tired. They have been working since last night to bring people to higher ground.

I've worked with these people and they are the best you will ever encounter, dedicated to saving lives and secondarily, protecting property.

Unless you have been in a flood, you really don't realize how overwhelming it can be and at the same time how courageously people stand and deliver in the face of extraordinarly bad odds.

For those people on the ground this is total war.

thanks for your posts, these rescue people are every bit the heroes that the NYPD and Firemen were. They are risking their lives to help others, and no one knows what additional horrors might unfold in this unstable situation.

Anyone who could be long gone, but is instead there in NOLA helping strangers is a hero in my book.

This disaster was quite easily, and repeatedly, forseen in detail.

Storms like Katrina are routine; the site of New Orleans and Mississippi has undoubtedly struck by hundreds of Category 4/5 storms.

Can someone give an analysis of how Gov. Blanco and Gov. Barbour are handling this event, and the future political impact of their performance?

I know it is early, but this could be a key event in the run up to their next election campaign.

AL was better off than MS and parts of SE LA... those homes are also constructed better. So far, all the images/videos I have seen from the 'harder' hit areas have shown that better constructed buildings held the surge best... this is especially evident with the high rises. Wherever the surge went, it took out houses/apts/most frame buildings.

We still don't have much from the worst hit areas, and at this time frame, that is extremely troubling. That coastal region has a lot of small wood frame houses... so far I'm hearing a lot of people figured if they survived Camille, they would survive this... Combine that with the focus on NO, you probably have a lot of people who didn't leave. Whoever came in contact with the surge... I don't know, they probably didn't make it.

Everyone is still mobalizing, and the real news is slow to trickle out. It's very concerning. FEMA modeling said a cat4/5 near NO could kill 50-60k. I think that's highly unlikely, but I suppose it's the only real reference we have.

3:13 P.M. - Governor Blanco: A lot of people have lost their lives, but we have no numbers because the priority is saving those who are alive so we don't have more casualties.

We may never know how many lives were lost. Bodies never recovered. It might be better to not even release total death estimates.
