The situation in New Orleans continues to deteriorate due to rising water levels and desperation. Search and rescue continues via boat and air. Authorities have announced the goal to evacuate all the remaining residents of NOLA. The New Orleans Mayor has reported numerous gas leaks throughout the city. Sporadic fires occurring. Attempts to evacuate hundreds of hospital patients from Charity Hospital and Tulane Medical Center are in process. Patients are being transported to other hospitals as far away as Florida.

The Army Corps of Engineers is at the NOLA levee breaks with current plans to drop 3000 lb sand bags in an effort to stop the flow of water. NOLA hospital evacuations continue for thousands of patients. Reports indicate all evacuees are being taken to the SuperDome, which is now surrounded by water. The generators at the Dome are now in jeopardy. The Governor of Louisiana has called for a day of prayer tomorrow...

Elsewhere, search and rescue continue in Mississippi and Alabama. Biloxi reports indicate catastrophic damage.

I thought they got all the tankers out of there before hand. Did they blow that, too?

The lake is open to the sea. Someone said it was 9 inches above sea level. The surge is long gone.

CNN just had a reporter on live. She said that a man at the dome on the 2nd floor calmly got out of his chair walked over to the rail and told the people below to watch out. He then proceeded to jump off and kill himself. The dome is now surrounded by water.

It's getting desperate this is only the beginning.

*** I say evacuate the prisons last, if they have time.**

I'm SURE the people gaurding them would agree with you...

But can you just IMAGINE the outcry? More screams of Gulags, and the attorney's lined up to file lawsuits??

This thing is going to be a MASSIVE litigation lottery anyway...

The important thing is to show mercy to the suffering whether we think they we're foolish to stay or not. God knows, I've made some poor decisions in my life and I'm grateful that I'm not paying for them now.

Yes. Let's do that, and leave the preaching for some other time.

No, the river appears to be flooding Arabi through the industrial canal. There was a photo of that posted where it appeared that the lock's gates were opened, and the river can be several feet higher than the lake during some floods. Also, the Superdome and FQ are, according to topo maps, at between 0' and 5' above sea level. The lake is normally around sea level, and the storm surge on the lake was reported to be between 9' and 12', but would now be mostly down from that because there is no longer the very strong storm winds from the north pushing the water against the city levees. So if the water is still rising downtown(which we don't know for sure, it may have by now leveled off), that suggests that there may be water coming in from the river, which was earlier reported to be near the top of the river levees, which are above 15'.

Disgusting. You can taste their glee at the potential economic ramifications and they're already starting an e-mail chain to blame this all on Bush...

The question involved what was in the water: is it a toxic soup?

Right now, I would say the answers are "Everything" and "yes". What a tragedy.

That's last night's news. The VP of Tulane University Hospital had been notified that two blocks of it was gone and the hospital was calling FEMA for a roof-top evacuation.

They = the mayor et. al.

There was a post about 3am last night here on FR that a levee had broken and the city was going to fill. I would hope that if we freepers knew, so would the local government guys.

I agree that that might deserve its own thread, especially since they tried to delete it before it could be preserved. He is one of their "distinguished brainiacs", not a drive-by troll on their site.

But I think posting DU threads is frowned upon around here.

I'll wait for an exemption from the mods, should they believe one is merited. A little liberal lunatic mocking to lighten up the dreary news today.

I saw some of your posts after I posted the response to you, and I noticed that I had read your original post wrong...

I apologize to you. I think we all have good intentions but other than money, I don't know that any of us can help long term...

I am sorry, again...

I heard that only 70 boats are available for rescue, so the Sheriff was demanding more. They were meeting at a Sam's Club and organizing for rescues. There are still entire Parrish's that have not been heard from.

This disaster is not something IMHO that could have been for seen. This, like 9/11 requires thinking outside the box. Not something we do well.

My fear is that not thousands, but 100's of thousands are dead or missing. The logistics of accounting for everyone, feeding, housing, clothing, not to mention medical care is enormous. The National Guard Unit here specializes in "displaced" persons. They have been called, or so I was told, to head to Louisiana. If anyone can account for missing and dead they can.
