The situation in New Orleans continues to deteriorate due to rising water levels and desperation. Search and rescue continues via boat and air. Authorities have announced the goal to evacuate all the remaining residents of NOLA. The New Orleans Mayor has reported numerous gas leaks throughout the city. Sporadic fires occurring. Attempts to evacuate hundreds of hospital patients from Charity Hospital and Tulane Medical Center are in process. Patients are being transported to other hospitals as far away as Florida.
The Army Corps of Engineers is at the NOLA levee breaks with current plans to drop 3000 lb sand bags in an effort to stop the flow of water. NOLA hospital evacuations continue for thousands of patients. Reports indicate all evacuees are being taken to the SuperDome, which is now surrounded by water. The generators at the Dome are now in jeopardy. The Governor of Louisiana has called for a day of prayer tomorrow...
Elsewhere, search and rescue continue in Mississippi and Alabama. Biloxi reports indicate catastrophic damage.

its a bit more then just "petty legalism" - the proper use of the US military, in a "shoot to kill" role in a US city against citizens, is an important part of our democracy.
Did ANYONE know until yesterday afternoon how bad it has been?
Um, yeah, its only been predicted for nearly 4 decades. Its only been planned for by FEMA, using this exact scenario(or actually a slightly worse version.) Only predicted by many freepers before the hurricane hit, and as every image came out throughout Monday.
Shoot to stop.
It's 5pm, President Bush is usually very right on time with his speeches. Still, this is an awfully big issue.
I've seen your posts. Go yank someone else's chain. Thanks.
There is legislation in place that would, in certain circumstances, put the whole country under military rule. We are not ther yet.
He is still in a meeting with all the depts on the Hurricane relief.
I never said or suggested that it was. The theme of my recent posts is that FEMA and administration heads need to use their position and power to get more military/nat'l guard into the city.
My friend and I were just talking about the lack of info for the remaining public. Couldn't the Army, police, or NG have gotten out there w/a bullhorn and a humvee, jeep or boat and get some word to people?
Where is the planning???
I just watched a clip from WWL as people were coming out of St. Bernard's Parrish. I'm in tears. People standing on levees waiting hours for help, the police chief begging for food and water. I repeat, where is the planning???
the administation has done well today from what I have seen and heard. I wish this speech by Bush was in primetime however.
At least I don't spend my time worrying about whether the reporter is pretty or not....
you are wasting too much thread space by complaining about dumb stuff.
We can only hope! : )
GW Bush got FEMA staged and into town quicker than his dad got FEMA into south Florida after Andrew. Bush's job is to SUPPLEMENT the local authorities. Jeb Bush was clearly in charge after the four hurricanes last year, with FEMA playing a subsidiary role.
Bush does not have the authority to roll into New Orleans and take over. I really don't know what you expect him to do.
To Hell with that. Too late. Where the Hell's the response?
CNN: They're showing a gas panic in Atlanta.

Sigh. Sad commentary about humanity. It's not safe to venture and proffer help and assistance.
I saw that. He said the law enforcement officer he was talking to regarding the looters was."I would rather shot 'em and put a sticker on em and leave it at that.
