The situation in New Orleans continues to deteriorate due to rising water levels and desperation. Search and rescue continues via boat and air. Authorities have announced the goal to evacuate all the remaining residents of NOLA. The New Orleans Mayor has reported numerous gas leaks throughout the city. Sporadic fires occurring. Attempts to evacuate hundreds of hospital patients from Charity Hospital and Tulane Medical Center are in process. Patients are being transported to other hospitals as far away as Florida.

The Army Corps of Engineers is at the NOLA levee breaks with current plans to drop 3000 lb sand bags in an effort to stop the flow of water. NOLA hospital evacuations continue for thousands of patients. Reports indicate all evacuees are being taken to the SuperDome, which is now surrounded by water. The generators at the Dome are now in jeopardy. The Governor of Louisiana has called for a day of prayer tomorrow...

Elsewhere, search and rescue continue in Mississippi and Alabama. Biloxi reports indicate catastrophic damage.

A great presentation underway on WWL TV showing satellite and other data on the extent of innundation around NO. Hit it if you can.

Now, they could have gotten a hold of the Texas governor to get the Astrodome or someplace else to use as an evacuation site, but that's now hindsight.

Yes it is. Deciding when to leave is always a judgement call, and mandatory evacuation is a public problem, not an individual decision.

But I do question the need to have a place to end up, at the time you depart the point to be evacuated. As a matter of fact, these folks are in a temporary location now, with final destination uncertain. They'd be better of in a different temporary location, one that isn't flooded, even if the final destination is unknown.

At the end of the segment Shep commented that the people were beginning to move. He said that he thought they had been told where to report for assistance.

Well tell that to the military spokesman at the FEMA news conference 2 hours ago, who responded to questions of why isn't there more nat'l guard being deployed into the city with lots of rambling about how the military is very restricted in what they can do, can only support, not supplant, civilian law enforcement, must be called in by the governor, etc. Sounded just like the earlier excuse-making of the governor. Ridiculous that such was still going on.

I fear if the death toll reaches into the thousands what that means for those that survived and can't get out....it is hard for me to fathom the scale of this disaster....America will probably be numbed by when all is said and done...I just hope I am wrong...

I think you are very right.

dental x-ray records in the form of computer backups will be available - those are insurance policy requirements

Does HIPAA require that the family request the dental records, or can the Medical Examiner request them?

Tulane Medical Center

LSP Troop B is requesting immediate backup. Troopers, riot squad, and national guard. He said the crowd is triple the size it was earlier and they are about to be overrun.

The location is 610 and eleshafield(spelling?).

Should I make another thread that has events going on down there? Lots of stuff has gone on and half of it never makes it on the news or anything.

It sure is taking a long time to load up this thread.

Can anyone start a news one.

I would but have only posted threads about a dozen times and nothing this complicated.

Southwest Airlines flew in supplies to the airport, and air evacuated people.

Now, if only they could keep this up.

While they are at it, would it be too hard for the media to pass out a few bottles of water?

So true.

These were people who arrived after the Dome was closed and after the storm arrived. People who may have been at home or work and lost their homes or were driven from wherever they were. They've come to the Dome but it's surrounded like a moat now by five feet of water. Short of walking back the way they came, there's no where to go. The thing is, they have no access to a bathroom (probably foul in the Dome now anyway, but water and food...at least water is key). And they have no umbrellas for shelter from the sun in 90+ degrees. It's been two whole days on the tarmac and they still have no help and one man had a two year old baby with no water. He's carrying the child with a damp cloth over it's eyes but that's it. The workers could just take a vehicle and drive down the ramp with a case of water for them but even though he asked her about them, this witch from the Emergency Services didn't even make the effort to say she'd look into it. They're are utterly incompetent. This incompetence is what is going to get all these people killed. This is going to get bad as people dehydrate and die right there on the concrete. I'm feeling rage inside. I hope Shep embarrassed her enough that she'll do something about looking into it but I'm not holding my breath. At least give them a case of water. How hard can that be. Drop a few umbrellas from a copter going by to give them shade. aaaAAAAAAAAARRRRRRRRRRGGGGGHHH!

I understand your frustration as I share it, as well as many others. To be honest, she cannot answer because no one above her has given any answers because of no leadership. After much thought, IMHO, I think the mayor and Blanco had to rush around and even FIND the damned Emergency Ops Plan. And, they probably haven't even dusted the thing off for 10+ years. And, they probably hired a subcontractor to write the thing, then promptly "filed" it.

It is very obvious that there was no "plan" and that is why things are out of control and no one at the state level knows what to do. Even if you have to plan on the fly, no one seems to have any shred of commen sense. They are all still in denial and absolutely frozen.

I worked in the nuclear industry, and we had yearly drills with all personnel, both on and off site. Some of the scenarios were right out of Dante's Hell. But, we practiced and did a lot of lessons learned. Too bad NO will learn that lesson too late. Florida has their act together, LA does not.

I would give just about anything to be a fly on the wall after this thing is over with when the Lessons Learned meetings will be reviewed. I think that lots of cities anywhere on the Gulf will (or should) be revising their plans soon (as they should).

What a horrible lesson to learn, for everyone. So sad.
