The situation in New Orleans continues to deteriorate due to rising water levels and desperation. Search and rescue continues via boat and air. Authorities have announced the goal to evacuate all the remaining residents of NOLA. The New Orleans Mayor has reported numerous gas leaks throughout the city. Sporadic fires occurring. Attempts to evacuate hundreds of hospital patients from Charity Hospital and Tulane Medical Center are in process. Patients are being transported to other hospitals as far away as Florida.

The Army Corps of Engineers is at the NOLA levee breaks with current plans to drop 3000 lb sand bags in an effort to stop the flow of water. NOLA hospital evacuations continue for thousands of patients. Reports indicate all evacuees are being taken to the SuperDome, which is now surrounded by water. The generators at the Dome are now in jeopardy. The Governor of Louisiana has called for a day of prayer tomorrow...

Elsewhere, search and rescue continue in Mississippi and Alabama. Biloxi reports indicate catastrophic damage.

The Army Corps of Engineers now says that the water in the city is level with the water in the lake. No more rising waters expected in New Orleans. They are bringing in 12,000 sandbags that weigh 20,000 lbs. to plug the leaks in the levees.

Something about this plan bothers me. I am not engineer but my gut tells me that this could make it worse. I think that the expectation of unintended consequences is not unreasonable. The river is dynamic, not static. Anyway, like I said, I am not an engineer so nuff said.

Well, if the sandbags and slings had been near the pumping station like they were supposed to be, the Corps might have been able to deal with this yesterday. :-P

CORRECTION: 1,200 sandbags that weigh 20,000 lbs each.

Dunno how fast they can move them. At 1 helicopter load every minute, I'd guess 24 hours to put them in place.

But what will they DO there? Certainly they aren't going to try to make them stay inside, are they?

I know what you mean. I lived in NO, worked there, spent years teaching remedial reading and writing to adults, and there are many great people there, poor as well as rich, but there are far too many predators and would be predators. And they are showing their colors.

Absolutly GREAT.
Now is time for all of us "Armchair Hydrologists and Engineers" to sit back and watch the truly professionals do their thing.

Not to be flippant about it, but its showing nothing. The reporter talking to the reported in the copter said the whole area just looks like a bunch of sticks. And its in at least a mile if not more.

they are plugging a wall at the canal, thus the lake. not the river.

Still immensely better than the alternative.

That was my question. Either the refugees will be wandering the streets of Houston, or they will be imprisoned in the dome. Neither one sounds like a real good deal to me.

Seems as though reports of "tsunami" about the surge were quite accurate.

Here is a sister's report from her brother who was dispatched to Gulfport 2 days ago.

Just an update. We finally heard from Steve. He's tired & hungry. He didn't get to eat yesterday and hadn't eaten as of 6:00 this evening. He said there's no time as there's just so much to do. They were going to stop & eat within the hour. There are no hotels for them there, they're sleeping on the sidewalk. He said that he had tagged 40 bodies today. He seemed to think that the media was holding back on the death toll big time. I truly hope they have some sort of counseling for these search & rescue guys after this is all over with.

Tomorrow's mission for them is to go from basement to attic in every standing home, business, shed, etc. and pull out bodies

Dunno, and it would be stupid to make then stay inside. Just about anything would be an improvement from the SuperDome in its current condition, though.

You are, of course, correct. In my mind, I was referring to the flowing of the water between the canal and the city as a river - obviously I did not make that clear.

"via SATERN"

BurbankKarl, how much traffic are you hearing? Is this on the 14.265 frequency? or on VHF?

I was trying to listen to some of the frequencies listed on the ARRL site, but did not hear anything.

I think Gov. Perry said that the Astrodome would be temporary and that he would be trying to find more semi-permanent places for them...

At least at the Astrodome they can go outside...and Astroworld is within walking distance...maybe they will open up and give the people (especially kids) can go free and have some fun, at least for a few hours...and food, and drinks...I know I would do that if I owned it.
