The situation in New Orleans continues to deteriorate due to rising water levels and desperation. Search and rescue continues via boat and air. Authorities have announced the goal to evacuate all the remaining residents of NOLA. The New Orleans Mayor has reported numerous gas leaks throughout the city. Sporadic fires occurring. Attempts to evacuate hundreds of hospital patients from Charity Hospital and Tulane Medical Center are in process. Patients are being transported to other hospitals as far away as Florida.
The Army Corps of Engineers is at the NOLA levee breaks with current plans to drop 3000 lb sand bags in an effort to stop the flow of water. NOLA hospital evacuations continue for thousands of patients. Reports indicate all evacuees are being taken to the SuperDome, which is now surrounded by water. The generators at the Dome are now in jeopardy. The Governor of Louisiana has called for a day of prayer tomorrow...
Elsewhere, search and rescue continue in Mississippi and Alabama. Biloxi reports indicate catastrophic damage.

Prayers for you because you can't read.
"That doesn't make sense to me, because "downstate" from Ponchartrain is New Orleans. I'm sure if there were any quick fix like that they'd have done it long ago. But in any disaster, the rumors will fly."
I'm talking about doooowwwnnn state. Not New Orleans. New Orleans borders the lake.
Kiss,;)
>>I was commenting on that to my wife earlier.
Not to split hairs or anything, but didn't you mention that your wife passed away last month? Here: http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-news/1468931/posts?page=296#296
According to fly.faa.gov, New Orleans International and Lakefront are both still closed, as is Stennis International in Bay St. Louis, MS and Gulfport/Biloxi.
The website claims New Orleans International is expected to reopen August 31 at 07:00 AM CDT. I'll believe it when I see it.
No date is set for reopening the other 3 closed airports.
He was lying then?
I think Bush should have had the military in there ASAP. C-130's should have been flying into the airport. Jwalsh07 and I chatted about this on Saturday. I am not pleased with Bush on this one. And his comments were brief before he went on to Iraq with pro forma comments, and then later, when he commented again, it was brief before chatting about prescription drugs or something. Not one fireside type chat, nothing. The whole thing was inadquate, the action was inadequate. And it is not hingsight. I was ranting on Sat AM about all of this. Thank heavens it was not much worse, because we got lucky at the end.
If someone shot your mom, and then drew a bead on your dad, would you take the time to prove your mom's death was that guy's fault or try to save your dad?
I count 100,000 people at risk in New Orleans right now.
Times 163 miles of affected coast kicks in a million more.
What are your priorities?

He said the Russians used a weapon to move Katrina to NO. It sounds pretty far out, but the Russians have bragged they have the ability to control the weather. yikes. I'm gonna listen to it again when it repeats in a few hours.
I will catch it tomorrow on Streamlink....Sure glad they didnt say we did it with HAARP
Live coverage is back on CNN, folks. As Fox and MSNBC is all reruns, if you want up-to-date info, switch to CNN, as much as that might kill you to do so.
Turned out to be only a bit true. They had a live commentator introducing re-run segments. Bah humbug. Going to NOLA.com for my info.
Wait, are you Torie? Oh, it's "Howlin'." Funny, I thought we had an agreement, I thought you were satisfied to avoid posting to each other, especially with your imagining me in "a corner" and so forth, and with your expression that you were "laughing out loud." (Or were you "rolling on the floor laughing out loud?" That's gotta hurt a little). Guess I understood wrong.
By the way, I was addressing the refugee camps, and the idea that the feds were not "on the line" (they were). As for assisted or "enforced" evacuations, I already posted about this, you cannot force people to leave who don't want to leave. They will hide, they will waste your time by arguing or resisting, and you need all your emergency staff and equipment at the crisis point, not somewhere between New orleans and Baton Rouge.
As long as it's not Aaron, I can watch.
Oh great, this will be my 3rd night "sleeping" on the couch with the TV on. My hubby will be searching the Yellow Pages for attorneys tomorrow!
I get your frustration, but I think it's more one of perception than reality. The sad fact is, the President could've given a speech and two press conferences today and it wouldn't have gotten any media saturation. Yesterday (Tuesday) was going to be all Irwin Allen/James Cameron disaster coverage no matter how hard any Republican tried to inject his message into the mix. Much better to let the story go for a day, coordinate your actions with your message and then go full-out.
As for the preparation for the storm, that's a local matter. The responsibility for being lackadaisical or negligent in that matter rests solely with New Orleans and the state of Louisiana.
Lack of engagement? What ever do you mean?
Do you realize he has to be INVITED in to the state by the governor?
And Haley Barbour's already told him NOT to come.
He declared a disaster before it was so he could send all the staging stuff as close to NO as he could get it to send in the second they can.
What else would you have him do?
Thank you so very much for the info. I forwarded it to him/her.
Here is my short answer, as posted to Howlin':

So? Who gives a care what you think?
Not one fireside type chat, nothing.
Yep. President Bush should've delivered a *chat* from his fireside locale regarding Katrina. [/sarcasm] Those big bucks you like to tout haven't been well-spent at all.
AHEPA Mobilizes To Provide Financial Assistance to Victims of Hurricane Katrina
http://www.ahepa.org/AHEPA/NewsRelease.aspx?d=1&rd=19682599&f=18&rf=-1521778430&m=1383&rm=16002648
WASHINGTONThe supreme president of the American Hellenic Educational Progressive Association (AHEPA), Gus J. James, II, is urging AHEPA family members, chapters, and districts to donate to the AHEPA Emergency Relief Effort in order to provide immediate assistance to victims of Hurricane Katrina. All checks should be made payable to AHEPA Charitable Fund, earmarked Hurricane Katrina and forwarded to AHEPA Headquarters at 1909 Q Street, Suite 500, Washington, DC 20009.
Our thoughts and prayers are with the victims of this catastrophic event and their families, James said. In the Hellenic spirit of philanthropy, civic responsibility and good citizenry, I encourage members of our entire AHEPA family to make contributions to assist our fellow citizens affected by one of the worst natural disasters to hit our country.
James has appointed Supreme Treasurer Cosmos Marandos and Supreme Governors K. Gus Hazifotis and Anthony Kouzounis as tri-chairs of the AHEPA Emergency Relief Effort. They will oversee and coordinate the donation drive.
Hurricane Katrina pounded the Gulf Coast with devastating force winds causing extensive damage and destruction to areas of Louisiana and Mississippi. In Alabamas Gulf Coast county of Mobile, which was also heavily battered by the hurricane, the AHEPA family maintains 10 senior citizen housing complexes and the Penelope House, the first shelter for battered women and their children in the state.
The mission of the AHEPA family is to promote the ideals of Hellenism, education, philanthropy, civic responsibility and family and individual excellence.
The AHEPA family consists of four organizations: AHEPA, Daughters of Penelope, Sons of Pericles and Maids of Athena.
For more information about the AHEPA family, or how to join, please contact AHEPA Headquarters, 202.232.6300, or visit http//www.ahepa.org for instant information.

This group was formed in 1922 after some members of the KKK lynched a (legal) Greek Immigrant in Atlanta. Their name may contain progressive but it is not "libera/left". They push personal responsibility and reward personal accomplishment. (Promoting immigrant assimilation into America)
I know some of the people involved. The are decent family folks. Their senior houses are not just for Greeks. If anyone can help it would be most welcome or if you could help get the word out. Thanks
