The situation in New Orleans continues to deteriorate due to rising water levels and desperation. Search and rescue continues via boat and air. Authorities have announced the goal to evacuate all the remaining residents of NOLA. The New Orleans Mayor has reported numerous gas leaks throughout the city. Sporadic fires occurring. Attempts to evacuate hundreds of hospital patients from Charity Hospital and Tulane Medical Center are in process. Patients are being transported to other hospitals as far away as Florida.
The Army Corps of Engineers is at the NOLA levee breaks with current plans to drop 3000 lb sand bags in an effort to stop the flow of water. NOLA hospital evacuations continue for thousands of patients. Reports indicate all evacuees are being taken to the SuperDome, which is now surrounded by water. The generators at the Dome are now in jeopardy. The Governor of Louisiana has called for a day of prayer tomorrow...
Elsewhere, search and rescue continue in Mississippi and Alabama. Biloxi reports indicate catastrophic damage.

I kid you not, a reporter for FOX asked some guy why he was taking a pile of shoes out of the Athlete's Foot Shoe Store, and he said "I gotta eat!". The most insane answer I ever heard. I yelled back at the TV "Baby needs a new pair of size 13 NIKE's!"
Full Disclosure: Somewhere on one of these threads there was a chart of the Army Corps of Engineers Levee System in / near downtown NO.
It shows some of the walls were constructed with sandbags pending improvements and strengthening.
Someone local should have made a stink long ago.
Also, the lack of a coordinated plan at the local / state level for coherent evacuation, crowd control, etc. IF the levees failed.
Also, the inane comments on CNN by various officials about "we can learn to enjoy this" or weak comments about looting...
And now, the cries of "Bush's fault" from lib sources, while Mississippi and Alabama were ALSO devastated, but are not engaging in blame...
Failure to prepare beforehand.
Failure to act decisively during the crisis.
Failure to act like adults after the event.
These people should be pilloried.

I know there is water damage but from the pictures doesn't it look like the older homes have less wind damage than the newer ones?
I would love to see an audit of the books. The difference between States -- or countries -- being successful, or not, is the number of people who are working and paying into the system. If they are not working and it becomes a "Class" system of rich and poor then sooner or later the chickens come home to roost. Lack of education, lack of will, lack of jobs and access to cheap drugs breeds poverty and pulls us all down.

Yes. 9 inches higher than normal is the only official figure I have seen.
A part of this may stem from an error in communications.
The mayor made a statement regarding flooding in the City.
It was reported that the mayor said that downtown would see 12 to 15 more feet in the next 12 hours.
Later it was reported that the mayor actually said the depth would increase to 9 feet in the next 12 to 15 hours.
Between those two events, many here calculated that if the level of the city flooding was to be 15 feet, then since the city was only 8 feet below sea level, the Lake must be high.
IIRC, that's about when you came in.
Water flows downhill, and if the drain is massive, it cannot assume much of an elevation diffence.

Even more than that, people have a psychological need to rationalize something, to place blame, to put a disaster in order to somehow lessen its impact. When a bad quake hits California, the argument will be, "why do they live there?" "Why weren't they prepared?"
When a tornado ravages a town, it's a little more difficult but people might say, "why didn't they seek shelter? Why did they try to run from it in their cars?"
It's a frustrating thing because we just don't know how to categorize it. It's easier to finger point and second guess. I'm doing it a little bit because I see little, to nothing, being done to stop the "bleeding" and a beautiful city is just.. well.. disappearing. I'm saying if we're gonna blame the mayor, or the governor, or Bob Smith who didn't do his part to donate money to the "levee fund" (that's a joke) then let's blame everybody. New Orleans doesn't exist in a vacuum. Nobody's city does. All wasted breath I'm sure.
Likely to be a big problem with Staphy.... you know the bad mold that is such a problem in humid areas.... and that is if some of the magnificent old houses are salvageable.

Any body in the military who can't get to a hospital in a few feet of water deserves a dress and a rattle. I'll bet that there are dozens of gun toting people right here on FR that would gladly take the job exterminating those punks who are trying to attack children.
The military is moving in large transport helos right now. They will start taking them out 30 to 40 at a time. It's going to take a long time, but they'll get it done. I also expect they will be moving in some high center transports and I heard that the swiftboats are being brought in.
You're not taking in to account outflow from the headwaters that were surged. If the outlet for the lake to the Gulf is constricted then the bowls get the water. Sea level is relative at this point.
I believe you were asking about the height of the tides in the lake?
Don't remember drains being mentioned.

You're probably right. What a horrible mess. I had a bad feeling on Sunday while watching all those people lined up waiting to go in the Dome... kind of like people being lead to the slaughter. :(
