Katrina Live Thread, Part XI

The situation in New Orleans continues to deteriorate due to rising water levels and desperation. Search and rescue continues via boat and air. Authorities have announced the goal to evacuate all the remaining residents of NOLA. The New Orleans Mayor has reported numerous gas leaks throughout the city. Sporadic fires occurring. Attempts to evacuate hundreds of hospital patients from Charity Hospital and Tulane Medical Center are in process. Patients are being transported to other hospitals as far away as Florida.

The Army Corps of Engineers is at the NOLA levee breaks with current plans to drop 3000 lb sand bags in an effort to stop the flow of water. NOLA hospital evacuations continue for thousands of patients. Reports indicate all evacuees are being taken to the SuperDome, which is now surrounded by water. The generators at the Dome are now in jeopardy. The Governor of Louisiana has called for a day of prayer tomorrow...

Elsewhere, search and rescue continue in Mississippi and Alabama. Biloxi reports indicate catastrophic damage.

Yep, I always fear the earthquake because there's no warning, even a tornado gives you a few minutes to prepare.

Fox was just as good with the pre and
during strike coverage. But, last night, CNN
ruled. I started watching them mostly.

But now I have switched back to FOX, CNN has
started their commie spin, and it was hard
to tolerate them anyway.

Whoaaaaaa ! LOL, the FOX version of the Dean scream !

Even that is better than the commie crap
on CNN now.

However, FOX seems ridiculous on the downed
power line thing. There is no power in the
downed power lines now. Why are they spewing
such garbage ?

Thanks. See my post in #2989. It's possible that no failure of steel bolts occurred at all. The slabs that were lifted out of place were probably just sitting on bearing plates at both ends -- to allow for expansion and contraction with changes in temperature.

Except for the fact that the Corps is already on scene and trying to fill the gap.

Some of the looters were POLICE Officers (just showed the video on MSNBC).... Marty Savaage is going to show the whole video tomorrow morning on the (urgh) Today Show.

Katie Colonic will probably say "It's Bush's fault".

Several hours ago, the official word came down that even though some people were still being alllowed in there, they would VERY SOON start getting people out----it/s becoming predictably very unsanitary, increasingly unsafe, a real health hazsrd, etc. etc.

Read the story about the looting cops on CBS/AP website earlier today. It was Walgreen's and they helped themselves by smashing display cases and helping themselves with the other vermin. Went to post the article but it has been pulled. Won't see me down there volunteering it's turned into Mad Max.

"Thirty of the victims in the county were from a beachfront apartment building that collapsed under a 25-foot wall of water "

Sound just like a story from Camile, damn people are stupid.

The Dome situation is amazing. We were talking about what was going to happen in the Dome on Saturday if they used it, and Blanco et al are acting like the deteriorating conditions are a complete surprise.

Torie, I know you are better than saying I told you so, but you did.

I didn't say that, and you know it.

I've already told you that I am not interested in your further input on this matter. Please respect that. I wish to have no further contact with you.

I've said my piece to you. Please go away.

If you choose to live in what is a swamp, you shouldn't complain about the government when the swamp floods. Just as when you choose to build your house at the beach, you shouldn't complain about the government when a storm surge comes and knocks it down.

I heard that too. Marking the homes of the dead with red x's. They cannot collect the bodies until the refrigerated trucks can get thru, and Lord knows when that will be.

Just awful! The final toll will be above 1000 for the entire Gulf Coast.

I did hear officials from Plaquimine Parish have said the gulf has moved 40 miles inland there.

The gulf has finally reclaimed land that man has been denying it for almost 100 years. Man has one many many battles in Southern LA, but this time Mother Nature has won the war.

I am a little confused. I see reports that there's going to be 5-15 feet of water into NO from the lake by tomorrow, but then the Mayor expects the city to be functioning in 4 weeks?

If/when the pumps are working and the breaches in the levees are fixed, the pumps can expel water at a rate of 1 inch per hour (the figure is actually the rainfall rate on greater NO that it can handle). 15 feet would take somewhere around a week to pump out.

Indigenous peoples engaged in looting. This is unprecedented, or we have never seen this behavior before.
