The situation in New Orleans continues to deteriorate due to rising water levels and desperation. Search and rescue continues via boat and air. Authorities have announced the goal to evacuate all the remaining residents of NOLA. The New Orleans Mayor has reported numerous gas leaks throughout the city. Sporadic fires occurring. Attempts to evacuate hundreds of hospital patients from Charity Hospital and Tulane Medical Center are in process. Patients are being transported to other hospitals as far away as Florida.
The Army Corps of Engineers is at the NOLA levee breaks with current plans to drop 3000 lb sand bags in an effort to stop the flow of water. NOLA hospital evacuations continue for thousands of patients. Reports indicate all evacuees are being taken to the SuperDome, which is now surrounded by water. The generators at the Dome are now in jeopardy. The Governor of Louisiana has called for a day of prayer tomorrow...
Elsewhere, search and rescue continue in Mississippi and Alabama. Biloxi reports indicate catastrophic damage.

I think we were talking apples and oranges. I have no opinion on how prepared we will have seemed in retrospect, as far as preexisting infrastructure. You may have a good point there. In fact, on another thread, I argued that even investing in a below-sea-level city, rather than relocating it, makes no sense to me, as even superior technology is still subject to the whims of nature.
My point earlier this thread was that actions taken by authorities in the few days leading up to and since Monday will not deserve the criticism that many here want to throw at them

Just reporting in that I am home, it's a mess, but intact, we just got the power on within the hour, and we are counting our blessings.
Bad PR for the airlines? haha....one or two of them might go under because of Katrina....I bet on Delta

I said the mayor, the Gov should have ordered up every available vehicle for an evacuation of NO to points west and north on Sat AM.
The airlines did what airlines do. And that is suspend service.
That just reminded me...does anyone know if the World War II Museum suffered much damage?
Ouch. Dunno how they'd get 60,000 people out of there in 12-18 hours.

Anita tells the truth...there was one road to Crescent City that was open......although you might have to get wet to get to the onramp.
No, you can't force every idiot. But while they got the contraflow system working on the highways since the last storm, they made no effort to get the willing ones among the 100,000 non-car types out. A quicker evacuation decision combined with buses (and trains on Saturday) could have reduced most of those staying to the usual idiots. On Brendan Loy's site, there was a link to another blogger who's mother-in-law was at a nursing home in Metaire. By the time, they issued the mandatory order, it was too late to get the nursing home patients out. The nursing home director admitted that he made the wrong decision on Saturday and that the lack of an evacuation order influenced him.
