The situation in New Orleans continues to deteriorate due to rising water levels and desperation. Search and rescue continues via boat and air. Authorities have announced the goal to evacuate all the remaining residents of NOLA. The New Orleans Mayor has reported numerous gas leaks throughout the city. Sporadic fires occurring. Attempts to evacuate hundreds of hospital patients from Charity Hospital and Tulane Medical Center are in process. Patients are being transported to other hospitals as far away as Florida.

The Army Corps of Engineers is at the NOLA levee breaks with current plans to drop 3000 lb sand bags in an effort to stop the flow of water. NOLA hospital evacuations continue for thousands of patients. Reports indicate all evacuees are being taken to the SuperDome, which is now surrounded by water. The generators at the Dome are now in jeopardy. The Governor of Louisiana has called for a day of prayer tomorrow...

Elsewhere, search and rescue continue in Mississippi and Alabama. Biloxi reports indicate catastrophic damage.

That's because WWL reported from someone with the city the Mississippi River levee has been breeched and has holes up and down the levee. They cannot tell where the Mississippi begins and ends now. GPS is no good because so many landmarks are now underwater and makes rescuing people difficult.

The Mississippi River is overlapping the levee.

People might think Voodoo and Harry Potter are neat and all knowing but I know someone out there who doesn't think so. This is not illusion or delusion this is reality.

Just what we need. More amateur theologizing.

Playing Jerry Falwell on this thread will get you persecuted.

Does anyone know if a lot of small boats can be brought from up and down the Gulf coast for rescues??? Sounds like they've got to get every last human out of NO asap. I know it's very different circumstances, but if the Brits could improvise and rescue 340,000 soldiers out of Dunkirk in 1940 (under German fire), I would think there ought to be a way to have a similar armada of small boats taking people out of NO tonight..... but I'm just an armchair meditator 1500 miles away, I'll be the first to admit it!

Agree, but panic is still the situation here. People are scared and not necessarily normal, if you can identify. I still maintain looting is hardly the problem to focus on at this moment in time. Our focus as citizens/Freepers should be on what we can do to help, not beef about a few who are looting.

President Bush has spoken.

He is in DC and soon to be in the disaster area.

The military IS already helping and on the way.

Hope that helps.

FEMA is not in total control according to the Sheriff who has been sent to guard a road. That spoke volumes.

"that inmates at Orleans Parish Prison are rioting and have taken hostages -- including children.."

Where are they going to go if they do escape? Up the River?

The Mississippi River is overlapping the levee.

You misunderstood. It's NOT in New Orleans!

I don't know if this has been said, but I hope the rest of the country doesn't take it's eye off the terroist ball. If Al-qaeda has anything planned, the would be the time to hit. I hope I'm wrong.

That was down in Plaquemines Parish, downstream from New Orleans. My guess is that the coastline down there will look very, very different once this is all over.

Most of that aid came by roads, which were not damaged.

Right now, there's only one functional truck-safe highway in or out of NOLA, and it's jammed with aid on wheels. But it's still just one highway. Unless you can wave a magic wand and repair the Twinspan and shore up the Causeway, that's the best they can do right now.
