The situation in New Orleans continues to deteriorate due to rising water levels and desperation. Search and rescue continues via boat and air. Authorities have announced the goal to evacuate all the remaining residents of NOLA. The New Orleans Mayor has reported numerous gas leaks throughout the city. Sporadic fires occurring. Attempts to evacuate hundreds of hospital patients from Charity Hospital and Tulane Medical Center are in process. Patients are being transported to other hospitals as far away as Florida.
The Army Corps of Engineers is at the NOLA levee breaks with current plans to drop 3000 lb sand bags in an effort to stop the flow of water. NOLA hospital evacuations continue for thousands of patients. Reports indicate all evacuees are being taken to the SuperDome, which is now surrounded by water. The generators at the Dome are now in jeopardy. The Governor of Louisiana has called for a day of prayer tomorrow...
Elsewhere, search and rescue continue in Mississippi and Alabama. Biloxi reports indicate catastrophic damage.

Tropical Storm 12
I imagine there are innumerable hazards to navigation that would keep transfer of people to a ship in the category of 'difficult, not impossible'.
1. Structural integrity of existing pierage. Who knows if what's left will support people.
2. Barging people out to an anchored ship: hard to do because you have to be very slow about it, and if you aren't you run the risk of sinking whatever rescue craft you use to get people out there. You can't use hovercraft either.
To my way of thinking, you put your energy on clearing a path from the Superdome West to the highest and driest location you can find where you can set up another staging area where loved ones can pick up and relocate people for the next month, and temporarily house, treat, and feed the rest. You salvage all of the schoolbuses you can muster for the job and concentrate on SAR to save as many as you can for staging at the Superdome for relocation.
anyone just see that shot of the water in the French Quarter on Fox? Wow
LOL!
Thanks for at least some small shred of good news today!
I just got back, power is on and off.
My sister is safe. Hundreds of trees down on her place, power lines down, no water, no phone. Her hubby is guarding the place and watching the animals, the llama survived the storm, and she is in BR but exhausted.
I was wondering the same thing - the tape they keep running is old, and they are not running the last audio of them in the Veteran's Building. I know that if Cantore somehow got harmed, it would surely be a lead story, so I can't imagine that the worst may have happened.
But it still makes me nervous for all those Veterans and families inside the building, as well as for Cantore and his crew. I just think that we would have been seeing a lot of first-hand accounts of the Gulfport storm from them had we heard from them...
I have posted this before...but, last year the same idiots were b!itching because he DID go to Florida....
All I know is...if I was tempted to watch CNN because of the good reviews about the coverage from fellow freepers, it disappeared after I heard about that remark!
That's real easy to type from the comfort of your home and its full refrigerator. 36 hours in, and no agency is bringing in any water to these persons not in the Superdome, and it is physically impossible for many of the stranded to walk the miles through high water to the dome. There's a big difference in stealing a TV and stealing food, and this isn't the normal disaster where waters recede and help reaches them within 72 hours.
YUP
Wonder if they could airlift in some of those pontoon type bridges the military use, or used to use?
They could use those to get people out to dry land, but I am sure they would think of that, and use them if it were possible to get them in...
ummm I'm not an environmentalist....
who is exhausted, your sister of the llama? :) glad to hear you are safe, CG.
Who did I jump on?
It's not funny! You should see how red my face is right now.
I just saw something on our local news that has left me speechless. The weatherman here is from New Orleans, his 80-year-old parents are there and he hasn't heard from them. The station has rented him an RV and a boat, and sent him down with a crew with a dual- purpose: to cover the aftermath and to find his parents. This could end up very bad.
showing full interview of Harvey jackson..he is so lost..casino building lifted up and moved in tact about 1/2 mile away in MS according to anderson cooper
That will be on my homepage....for perservation
That picture makes me so sad. It's so sad. Sorry.
Well stated. Logistics. Dingy's, boats, ships, and helicopters need fuel/maintenance. This takes time. Those that are first responding (GO USCG!) are doing the best that they can with what they have.
