The attached is a video from WWL TV in New Orleans. The mayor of New Orleans gives a very detailed report of the condition of the city. As bad as the national news is painting the picture, it falls short of the devastation that has occurred.
There are 8 refineries located in the New Orleans to Mobile areas. Nearly 1/2 of all the gasoline in the country is refined here. These are all shut down, and they don't know for how long. Even if they were capable of running the refineries, there will be a huge shortage of workers as they have evacuated. All of Metarie, Slidell, Mandeville, Kenner, etc is under water and there is no place for them to come home to. Large oil super tankers will not be able to off load to the refineries even if they could run. The pipelines and transport facilities are all in jeopardy.
The New Orleans port and the Mississippi River structure carries nealy 1/4th of the entire countries goods and equipment. The export and import of goods will cease for a long period of time. Fill up your tanks, stock up your goods. Prices will be rising

The MSM is HAPPY about this oil scenario. CNN reporterette was positivly dejected when it was announced the Gulf of Mexico oil platforms were pretty much unharmed.

With regards to the earlier post; re: 10 per cent of US refining capacity had to be shut down. I have never understood why this should be so big a deal. I buy gas about once a week and it usually takes me 12 gallons or so to fill the tank of my Scion Xb. All that 10% cut should mean to me is that I buy only 10 gallons next time
Here is a link to the US refining capacity. It has been running over 90% since the early 1990s. IT is not just the crude supply that affects gasoline prices. The cost is much more affected by our local refining capacity. There hasn't been a new refinery built in over 15 years. ..but we all heard the governor and mayor waffle and meander in giving a mandatory evacuation.
I remember it took outside influence to light a fire under these two!
I personally hold them responsible for folks not understanding the seriousness of this storm.....for hesitating to leave...(like they saw the mayor and governor hesitate)...
..and not providing some kind of help in getting the infirmed & extremely poor out of the city....somehow.
By the time these two took decisive action....it was too late for many.
Give me Haley Barbour begging folks to get out of Mississippi.

New Orleans will come back stronger and better than ever. This is a city that has has hundreds of years of cultures, changes and hardships, and has survived them all. I have full confidence that "The Big Easy" will come back with oil, shipping, tourism, etc. bigger and better than ever. The Mayor is a moron, the Governor is short of smarts, but GW Bush and Louisiana conservatives will carry the day!!!
The problem is, is that the people still there are largely the shut-in types or close to it.
Blind, Handicapped, elderly, mentally disabled, insane, drug addicts, etc and/or people taking care of people with such problems.
The bulk of the non-attached "fit" people who could clamer aboard a railcar have largely hoofed it out of town (or clamered abord railcars).
Obviously there are exceptions, but that's the bulk.
From the same mayor who was in denial before?
