NEW ORLEANS. IT'S WORSE THAN YOU ARE HEARING!
WWL Television in New Orleans, LA ^ | Aug 29, 2005 | none

Posted on 08/30/2005 8:03:13 AM PDT by alligator

The attached is a video from WWL TV in New Orleans. The mayor of New Orleans gives a very detailed report of the condition of the city. As bad as the national news is painting the picture, it falls short of the devastation that has occurred.

There are 8 refineries located in the New Orleans to Mobile areas. Nearly 1/2 of all the gasoline in the country is refined here. These are all shut down, and they don't know for how long. Even if they were capable of running the refineries, there will be a huge shortage of workers as they have evacuated. All of Metarie, Slidell, Mandeville, Kenner, etc is under water and there is no place for them to come home to. Large oil super tankers will not be able to off load to the refineries even if they could run. The pipelines and transport facilities are all in jeopardy.

The New Orleans port and the Mississippi River structure carries nealy 1/4th of the entire countries goods and equipment. The export and import of goods will cease for a long period of time. Fill up your tanks, stock up your goods. Prices will be rising

Here she comes to save the day. Witch Hillary is on the way.

It's about 90% barges and railcars.

Sure, you could jump on top, but it's not really anything that can handle people very well.

I am flabbergasted by the attitude on this thread. No one need panic, but frankly, it IS a bad situation. Yesterday, when Shep was standing out in the French Quarter and it didn't seem so bad in NO, I thought....just wait until they get choppers in the air. This morning, he and his crew are pulling out. If Shep isn't willing to stay there for face time, it probably is bad.
I am not a doom and gloomer. I would rather be pro-active tho, and know the situation.

" Different time...different kind of men..."

Correct! Many, if not all of these men experienced first hand the total and complete devestation of WWII. They had experienced carnage only the rest of us can imagine.

Water is still rising, and will keep doing so for weeks. The remnants of the storm is dumping a lot of water in the Mississippi drainage basin.

I would suggest the Army Corp start breaking levees up stream of NOLA to help control the down stream flooding

I agree the situation is bad, and New Orleans is most certainly a critical path city for the USA economy on both the oil producing, processing and shipping port fronts, but I believe the people of America and the folks in Louisiana are strong to the bone and will surprise all at how fast they come back. Just as the weak sisters who predicted Kuwait would burn for years from the oil well fires started by Saddam Hussein were dead wrong, so will the naysayers here be proven wrong.

However, the American people have now had their eyes opened as to the America they will buy into if Cindy Sheehan and her beloved Democrat Party vermin friends ever get to pull our troops out of Afghanistan and Iraq. If that ever happens, it will only be a short time until the war of the the terrorists comes here via nuclear, bio or beheading events. Folks take a good hard look at the suffering occurring in our southeast, and multiply that by tenfold as the terrorists have a field day destroying America and her people. This current Democrat Party needs to be totally destroyed at the ballot box. If not, your destiny meeting with St. Peter is not far away, thanks to the Cindy Sheehan's and Democrat vermin of the world!!! Wake up!!!

I think the New Orleans officials could have prevented a lot of it by actually spending the money they collect to maintain the levee system on maintaining the levees.

***

Near where I live, the "big city" had a major water main break that flooded much of the downtown area...shut down a number of businesses and caused extensive damage and loss. Some of the water pipes are around 100 years old, but except in maybe a handful of places, they were never maintained. It's a wonder these pipes haven't burst long before this. But that's the problem...the city has never bothered to do anything; it has managed to squander all of its revenue to the point of being in financial distress; so now it has no money to maintain the water pipes even if it wanted to. It's only a matter of time before another break occurs.

This is what many cities do -- they make residents pay through the nose in income and property taxes, but where does that money go? Certaintly, doesn't go toward maintaining the city infrastructure.
