Hurricane Katrina made landfall today at 6:10AM CDT, and she continues to drive northward into Mississippi and Alabama. Several local radar sites are down. Tornado and flash flood watches and warnings are widespread.
President Bush has declared major disaster areas, clearing the way for federal aid.

That reminds me of a friend that I once had. She heard that stamps were going up in price and bought a huge supply in order to save money. Ha Ha
I think that is one of the above ground cemetaries...
I've heard fairly recent reports (like in the past 3-4 years) of wounded soldiers receiving what they thought was free help from the RC -- meals, toiletries, etc. -- and then getting a bill in the mail a few weeks later. Presumably mail delivery was spotty where you were after Andrew. Maybe that's why you didn't get a bill.
No it is not. If we were not locked in by grandchildren, we would be east of Jackson.
Is that where they expected the worst part?
I know -- was just copying you on my reply to silentknight.
I live in West Tennessee, you can have it if you want and we will pass this time.
We need rain here in the worst way.
Out here, in the desert, It's a
toss up of which is harder...The
ground or the concrete
Quote "The Red Cross seems to regard disasters as dandy fundraising events. They won't get one cent from me.
I hear ya & I'm w/ya! "
That is because disasters COST a ton of money. The government doesn't pay the Red Cross to help these people. The AMERICAN PEOPLE give money to the Red Cross in order for people to be helped. These are not fund raising opportunities. This reality. It costs money to take care of tens of thousands of people.
You are clueless. The Red Cross is not a money making operation. The money that comes in goes back out. The Red Cross is made up of thousands of LOCAL chapters across the United States. They service YOUR communities.
You really have no clue as to what you are talking about.
Nobody is trying to make money off of a disaster.
Geesh
DOes this mean no radios are operating, or just some?
BTW the freq for health and welfare traffic is 14.265 MHz.
there is a church there also - I think it was a church garden.
Stay safe and check in when you can.
What do you all think of an aftermath check in thread so we can follow up on FReepers affected?
OK. But if that was the ocean at Jackson, then most of Mississippi is in serious trouble.
OMG- did any of you just SEE the chopper shots of NO??? Mile after mile under water...it is extraordinary..just at the end of Shep's show.
Thank you.....waiting for info about Oak Harbor neighborhood......right off I-10.
I have received phone cards, clothing and toiletries from the RC when I was wounded and never received a bill ever from them, nor has anybody I know who was wounded with me. The RC most of the time are not even there when they are handed to you in the military, its been my experience some military liason(sp?). I think this is an urban legend you are spreading.(IMO)

I just saw some video of Metairie by West Esplanade and Vets...Lakeside Shopping Center...I lived in that neighborhood for four years. My friend lives there, and it is flooded.
Sigh.
