The Red Cross seems to regard disasters as dandy fundraising events. They won't get one cent from me.

I hear ya & I'm w/ya!

I got sick of the RC treating disasters as "fundraisers" about ten hurricanes/tornados ago.

Memphis is part Mississippi, part Arkansas. The res of Tennessee does not claim it.

I'll agree with that. I lived in another part of Tennessee for 4 years as a kid and then Memphis for a year as an adult. It's not the same as the rest of the state.

Is this thing coming near NC?

No, it is supposed to track through west Tennessee.

This will be a post for the record to compare and contrast the capabilities and inadequacies of two Fox reporters..... Rita Braver and Molly Hennenburg.

Some time back, Rita Braver was assigned the beat of Norfolk I think, perhaps Virginia Beach, when a hurricane was coming up the coast out of Hatteras and the outer banks. It was in the evening and Rita was positively gushing in fear as she reported in the rain. The rain and wind were present and there had been a hurricane but Rita completely lost control and allowed her emotions to take control as she reported pending death and destruction. She was horrified and seemed to have never actually been outside in the rain. She did not bother to learn the storm had been downgraded to a tropical storm.

In the next FOX segment, the reporter north of Rita reported it was all over, the wrath of the storm rung out in North Carolina. He made Rita a fool for allowing emotions to control and misreport the events.

Contrast that with the also blonde and blue eyed and heavily degreed Molly Hennenburg. Although not positioned on the coast, Molly was still in an actual category 1 hurricane passing through Mississippi. The rain was pelting and the wind was blowing and Molly, calm as a cucumber carefully related the events of the day where she was. In her late reports a beaming Molly was right on target with an Excellency report of the situation.

It should be remembered that Molly is the only reporter to enter Najaf and interview the grand Immam. She discreetly covered her hair but she charmed the old man tight out of his drawers and had a fantastic interview.

Rita is gone, long live Molly.

During the 1987 quake of SF, I was in the Bay Area. For some strange reason, folks in the southern part of CA could NOT contact by phone anyone in the SF Bay Area.

The phone companies implement traffic controls to ensure that calls for help from inside the disaster zone get priority. Calls into the disaster zone are considered to be less important.

It's despicable that the MSM seems to care more about lives in trendy tourist areas than in other parts of America.

I was watching a FOX reporter end his broadcast with some remark similar to this:

"The longer this keeps up, the worse the damage will be"

Well DUH!!!!

JUST what did you expect? Everything gets fixed if this storm leaves earlier????

The reason you hear less about Pass Christian, Waveland, Gulfport and similar areas is that the major news outlets concentrated their resources in New Orleans thinking the worst damage would be there.

Okay. I hope you are right. I also understand the market is small. But there are lots of small markets that have checked in where they got hit pretty hard. In southern MS even the governor, apparently, is getting little info. I'm praying.

"Wind and rain has subsided on the East side for now. The bands seem to be moving farther east but there may some more coming in. Hopefully they'll be less obstreperous."

Heavens I hope so...ya'll have been pounded enough down there!

Familiar landmarks destroyed

At DeBuys Road at U.S. 90., the Olive Garden and Red Lobster restaurants were obliterated.
In Biloxi at Edgewater Village, most of that shopping strip mall was devastated. The McDonald's is gone, the Village Sports Pub is gone.

The Hard Rock Casino on Casino Row in Biloxi, which was scheduled to open next week, will have to be rebuilt. The superstructure was severely damaged.

There have been reports that there are several casino barges that were pulled out of water and onto land.

Part of U.S. 90 collapsed in front of Edgewater Village

CNN is showing a iron gated park in the French Quarter - huge trees are down in the park (I mean huge) but the statue of Jesus in the park is untouched - the trees feel all around it. - amazing!
