Hurricane Katrina made landfall today at 6:10AM CDT, and she continues to drive northward into Mississippi and Alabama. Several local radar sites are down. Tornado and flash flood watches and warnings are widespread.
President Bush has declared major disaster areas, clearing the way for federal aid.

Not yet, it hasn't got there, Fox screwed that up showing the ocean shot.
Is this as bad as I think it is?

To the basement I go.
Later
No. You will get the squirts.
"I'd rather be saf(er) than sorry."
I heard that before and what followed, all night long.
ffffttttshsshsshshshsttttt... followed by the long deep drawn out moan. Ahhhhhhhooooooooaohhhahhahahahh.... Then the fffffttttttttsssttttsssttstfffttttss...mooooan...all night long. NExt day they were white as ghosts and had each lost 10bs.
Stay safe and please check in later to let us know you're OK.
The reason you hear less about Pass Christian, Waveland, Gulfport and similar areas is that the major news outlets concentrated their resources in New Orleans thinking the worst damage would be there. The Gulfport-Biloxi TV market isn't that large - there are only 3 TV stations, which are small and have limited resources, like live trucks. FOX News has Steve Harrigan in Gulfport, and the Weather Channel's Jim Cantore was in the middle of the storm there (as usual - if he comes to your town during hurricane season RUN!).
The FOX affiliate, WXXV's website is down. The ABC affliate, WLOX, evacuated their station due to their storm. There's some information on the Biloxi newspaper's website, http://www.sunherald.com.
The most recent dispatch from WLOX TV in Biloxi:
Hurricane Katrina Update
WLOX on duty staff would like to inform all visitors to WLOX.com that they are safe despite serious damage to the physical facilities.
Updates of storm coverage are being supplied by WLOX's sister stations.

Take care..
That map is the most amazing thing.
Will someone please let me know when class starts for that?
I did not see an ocean shot. I saw some trees down, and the capitol grounds with some trees down.
Hwy 90.
(We call it OST here too.)
Check back in after its over.
They probably made him buy the stationery and stamp from them at a marked up price.
It ain't good. We're still hearing hardly anything from there to Biloxi. Just the photos alone from Biloxi and some of the tape PMSNBC had while the storm was going on is terrifying. Several have mentioned that the news and photos will be extreme in the coming days. I believe that's exactly right.
It's very cool, but so far all the addresses we've looked up for family aren't accurate. They're off by a few houses.
Other than that, it's amazing.
They are giving health and welfare traffic now....telling the hurricane center to contact their wives they are okay...this is NWS personnel.
These people need our prayers!!!!!
