Hurricane Katrina made landfall today at 6:10AM CDT, and she continues to drive northward into Mississippi and Alabama. Several local radar sites are down. Tornado and flash flood watches and warnings are widespread.
President Bush has declared major disaster areas, clearing the way for federal aid.

Sorry. I may have missed part of the debate. AFAIK, all "comprehensive" automobile insurance policies cover "acts of God" including flood damage. I don't think you buy "flood" coverage separately (though not all states require comprehensive coverage).
The federal program is for real estate. I didn't realize you were talking about autos.
Oh My Gosh!!!!!!!
"One teaspoon per gallon and boiling is still reccomended if possible for at least 12 minutes."
That sounds like a bit of overkill from what I've been able to learn, but better safe than sorry, I guess. Consuming that amount of chlorine bleach over a lengthy period of time (months or years) can't be healthy, but it's sure healthier in the short term than cholera, typhoid or e. coli.
Thank you. That's what I was afraid of.
We have no use for the Red Cross. During Hurrican Alicia they made everyone pay for donated water and home made sandwiches. They wanted money for everything they did. Any wonder they had several "helpful" hands moving their sorry rears out of Galveston asap.

Square miles of houses under water...
Aaaach! I didn't hear a freight train for the one which came about a mile or two away from here either. Fortunately, it went in the other direction.
It's not raining very much right now, but the pine trees are swaying.
Brian Williams reported in the 5:30pm news that through all of this at the Superdome, not a single announcement has been made to the crowd, no information whatsoever.
What an excellent job of planning for an emergency that they knew was coming and had almost 40 years to prepare for. I guess the mayor doesn't know if he has the legal authority to give out just a bit of info to try and calm the restlessness and anxiety.
Please let me hear about Pass Christian and Bay St. Louis, MS. I used to live there on my sailboat. I still have a lot of friends there and visited only last month. Post or Freepmail me please.
I didn't hear anyone talking, but below the reporter, there was a big banner and that's what it said. 75% of homes in Gulfport lost their roofs.
But that seems impossible and it's why I'm asking if someone else saw it; maybe a typo?
Work at Home Depot part time....The trucks with supplies are already rolling.
Accurate Remarks.
It boggles the mind that so many didn't have the common sense to fill up every container they could find with drinking water yesterday.
You'll get the squirts using that much.
There's going to be so much sickness, infection, snake and whatever bites .. God help them all. This truly was the BIG one... I know NO was spared much, and it will be hell on earth in that coastal region for months and months. Where's the mayor of NO?
Apparently even Mississippi Emergency Management hasn't heard a word from either of the above locations all day.
Talked to my aunt, and my cousin lives in N GA. She says the skies are clear, and everything is okay as of a couple of hours ago. Thanks for the updates. Like I said, I don't know hurricanes, so it didn't occur to me that it could hit Georgia.
That's what I recall from Shep this afternoon... massive flooding down there.
No recent news.
