THat is classic storm surge damage. If you go down along the Gulf coast you will find that most Condos have parking decks on the first floor and the condos start above that. Thats because the strom surge will take out the bottom floor bt leave the frame standing.

Kind of like what I speculated earlier in the thread. If it was up to the second floor of the Beau Rivage, it was going to be real bad in Biloxi.

The guy from the Red Cross just said on MSNBC this will be the largest natural disaster they have EVER responded to.

Haven't followed your sis in law's story, but imagine being able to ride out a hurricane unaware of its passing? That is a magnificent scientific achievement.

"Biloxi McDonalds"

At least the structures are still there, so there's hope that loss of life will be minimal.

Frame construction waterfront and beach houses might not have faired so well as a concrete and steel commercial building, though.

Looks like the ground floor of anything in that vicinity was pretty well gutted by the surge.

The same friends I stayed with during Andrew, out in the Redlands, west of Homestead, won't have power back until probably Wednesday. They had 80-90 mph winds and the stuffing scared outta them, but no major damage, thank God. They've learned their lesson well.... prepare, prepare, prepare. Those in Homestead proper, those east of US#1 and Florida City did not fare so well.

I just keep thinking back to Hurricane Andrew, and how we all felt so relieved "it wasn't worse" - until a few days later, when the full devestation was revealed.

I felt blessed this morning that New Orleans had been "spared" a direct hit, and hoping that it would not damage the rest of the coast. But now, waiting for word from Mississippi and rural points around the Gulf, I'm getting this sick feeling...

Hurricane Katrina is so huge, so monstrous, that there is no way to be "spared" from it. Even if one city might "dodge the bullet" and escape complete destruction, another city will not. It is not the same as any other hurricane I have ever witnessed. If any stories of mercy have come out, it is truly a testimony to the saving power of God.

Praying to God that those still in peril may be saved...

"There's no question is was a horrible storm and we've only begun to learn how bad. Yet, I know I'm relieved. It could have been so much worse, and it was a close call. The difference between megadisaster and disaster might boil down to 20 miles and slight adjustment in storm track and intensity."

Yes, it could have been a LOT worse than it has been. The actual death tolls are always bad enough without all the conspiracy theorists popping out of the woodwork to scream government coverup. Next thing we'll be hearing is that GW created this storm to get rid of NO and steal Louisiana's oil.

As for damage estimates, quintuple any inflationary consideration out of hand when talking about building materials. Especially since all or Canada's trees come from the US and all of our lumber comes back down from Canada (fewer environazi regs in that "Green" country).

But to put it into perspective, there's thousands of people who've just been made homeless...but at least they're alive.

Jeanne Meserve CNN....multiple bodies in the water Ward 9

People trying to walk out now through two + feet of water. Not enough boats. All officers to respond, but they can't get to their boats to get the people out.

Reports on CNN are horrific. This is much worse than earlier reported. Stupid reporters on Bourban Street. They were clueless.

There are tornados all over the place in Georgia. Gwinett country, between Rockmart and Cedartown, also one spotted at Hwy 61 and Bobo Rd near Dallas in Paulding County, south of Atlanta, simply all over the place...............

OMG, this is unbelievable. For the people left stranded in their homes without power it's about to get worse. The temps are going to go up into the high 90's (100 here on Wednesday, supposedly). And that's before the heat index. Then there are so many without homes or homes that are uninhabitable; where on earth do you put so many displaced people? Not to mention the diseases all that stagnant water is going to start producing. The horrors of this storm are far from over.

Yeah, but they were also stuck where they were. They reported what they could see. Now they're moving out and about -- let's see how they do.

The guy from the Red Cross just said on MSNBC this will be the largest natural disaster they have EVER responded to.

Than statement reminds me of the tsunami, when after initial reports of a few casualties, then the reports started coming in.

Of course, he is speaking to the wide area affected, which is going to get bigger as this thing continues.

Red Cross has all available volunteers out. Many volunteers have put themselves in harms way to help shelter everyone down there.

They will be feeding hundreds of thousands of meals in the upcoming days.
