Hurricane Katrina made landfall today at 6:10AM CDT, and she continues to drive northward into Mississippi and Alabama. Several local radar sites are down. Tornado and flash flood watches and warnings are widespread.
President Bush has declared major disaster areas, clearing the way for federal aid.

I've written a note and I will ping both you and Alnick about anything I hear on Slidell.
Do you have family there?
You might want to check the Times-Picayune website.

Thank you for that link.
I'll ping alnick.
Thanks...might have to use that info someday...better to know than not know.
Discussion board thread about St. Tammany Parish with some very specific information about Slidell.
Alnick - I know you're time is limited and this thread is 23 pages long as of 9:00 a.m.

I hope they left.
Talked to folks in Mobile and MS all day yesterday. Haven't heard a word from LA.
Oh dear. I hope they left too, lugsoul, because Slidell sounds like it's in pretty bad shape.
If I see more specifics, I'll ping you.
Thanks...checked it and nothing about LB. I also checked the local coast paper and they only mention a church in LB
I heard this morning on FNC they are worried about gas leaks too. It's overwhelming.
But America can handle this as we've done before. Other countries need outside help and we'll manage without help from anyone. But WE all need to pitch in as much as we can.
I'm wondering if there is an effort underway by the military to help those troops in Iraq and Afghanistan who are worried about their families back home.
Right now, that's the only live stream I've got from New Orleans; I lost WWL-TV sometime yesterday.
I've also been watching streaming coverage off and on from WKRG in Mobile; their damage, while not quite as extensive as that in New Orleans, is very, very bad.
Alnick - specific page of information about Slidell on a message board.
Lugsoul - I see you already saw this.

mhking - have you heard from those you love and are worried about? And I hope you got my freepmail from yesterday. I did end up speaking up on the open thread.
Fox just showed Steve Harrigon in Gulfport. He walked into the debris - said the saddest thing was realizing this was not just lumber, but the personnal belongings of someone. He held up three toys - all beanie baby related - a Bopper, a teenie bopper, and the new 4-H bear.
I just saw that report. Horrifying.
Listening to local radio. Red Cross is reporting this is the largest disaster in American history. They're about to start reporting on road conditions. Will take notes and post back asap.
Lady on CNN just said she went back to her home (in Biloxi, I think) and it just wasn't there. Oaks and magnolia trees gone, no sight of their cars, nothing recognizable on the property.
Thank you, LibSnubber.
I heard the Red Cross spokesman say this morning it was the biggest disaster in the United States. And thank you for listening to those radio reports.
Also - anyone heard anything in the Mobile reporting about Dauphin Island?
I read that Dauphin Island is gone, lugsoul. I'm sorry.
It was on one of these Live threads.
