Hurricane Katrina made landfall today at 6:10AM CDT, and she continues to drive northward into Mississippi and Alabama. Several local radar sites are down. Tornado and flash flood watches and warnings are widespread.
President Bush has declared major disaster areas, clearing the way for federal aid.

no these are not the downtown bridges this 1-10 between slidell and new orleans this goes near where they produce theehuge rocket that lifts the soace shuttle
pump it back into lake?
Sanchez of CNN now talking about the breached levy w/ a NO Fire Dept. guy this very minute.
Just the tank, no rockets.
Huh? The rest of the country had been telling him to wake his ass up and evacuate the town. The rest of the country has been telling the city and state for years that they were vulnerable and to take care of their own and raise their levees, while instead they didn't do jack. So are we supposed to buy their insurance, buy their school supplies, buy their shoes, too?
see cnn thinks the breach is on the lake itself not the canal its a misunderstanding the guard guy thinks he is talking about the canl cnn thinks its the on the lake itself
Corp of Engineers will head out at sunrise to fix breach.
its typical correspondants not knowing new orleans lingo like the correspondants didnt even know where kenner and metarie were for heavens sake.
Thanks, I-10 makes a lot more sense.
CNN says that the Army Corp of Engineers are in a brainstorming session, will go out to the breach in the morning.
Person on with Sanchez says it's serious .. and "the Army Corps of Engineers is going to be assessing it ... they've been in meetings .. and will decide when they get their assessments completed" .. blah blah blah. Incredible. Lt. Kevin Cowan, LA Emergency Preparedness.
Pray pray pray for these people .. something's very wrong here.
I assume the canal is at the local level and is pumped into the lake? Breach would have to be at lake levee unless the canal has levees too!?
We could also begin to see the Mississippi River start to back up. All that water forced into this delta could clog or slow the flow of water within the river. New Orleans could end up receiving four major flooding inputs. Torrential rain from Hurricane. Storm surge from Ocean. Overflow from Lake Ponchatrain. Overflow from the rising Mississippi. And the general Mississippi flow may have backed up and their could be millions of gallon of that backed up water still trying to flow through the delta.
thanks on the clarification by the way an article said damage there could further delay the shuttle relaunching
Yes. Slidel ET plant and Bay St Louis NSTL both probably hit hard.
Actually, the floodwaters from the Midwest won't add much, as there are locks in place that allow the Mississippi to flow into the Atchafalaya River if necessary.
go to post 2392 go to that forum the guy put up a map of where the breach occured it clarifys actually it comes from the lake
"The breach has to be repaired"
Yes, but appearently COE in no big hurry!
Well, here's the dilemma. To go to bed now in order not to miss all the action tomorrow, or to go to bed now and miss something important that happens really soon. I'm going to opt for a bit of a snooze. This is ruining my sleep pattern. Although that's hard to do as I stay up half the nite. I'm sure others here are pondering this very same issue, "to sleep or not to sleep, that is the question." The bed beckens. Nitey nite all.
Maybe nature's trying to reclaim it's wetlands.
