Oh no .. was she saying it was that bad in Houma? My friend's cousin .. a priest .. was going to be riding out the storm there. Dear Lord .. the death toll will be horrific .. I'm convinced. May God give them peace and amnesia from their last night on earth.

I was just thinking that Aaron Brown, drab as his is, was more fitting for the story tonight, at least IMO.

He's bland style set the right mood for these horrible details.

Very similar to Andrew destruction - but a much, much larger scale.

That video is horrifying. I hope all those good people got to dry land. How long will it take them to set up tents and get food services going?

all this rain/water that is going north now, isn't it just going to come right back down the Mississippi?

It depends. The bulk of it will not. In Central Mississippi and most of Alabama, the water will drain to the Gulf through the Pearl, the Tombigbee, etc. The Mississippi drainage generally runs between along a line between I - 55 and the Mississippi River - the area of Mississippi getting the least rain. Jackson, Hattisburg, Meridian all do NOT drain to the Mississippi.

Farther north in Alabama, and for all of Tennessee to be hit, the water will drain into the Mississipp via the Tennessee and Cumberland Rivers via the Ohio, so it will be a long time before that water gets back down to the lower Mississippi. Most of the Georgia rain will flow south through that state via the Chattahoochie and Flint. Only the extreme NW corner drains into the Tennessee River and thus the Mississippi. A small portion, given the footprint of the storm, will drain into the Atlantic rather than the Gulf.

In Louisiana itself, much of the drainage will be into Lake Ponchitrain or the Pearl. Just west of Baton Rouge, for example, the drainage is into the Amite River, not the Missisippi.

Yes, but other reporters are managing to get on rescue boats with fire-rescue squads, up in helicopters, driving through neighborhoods, etc. - can't Fox spring for some form of transportation for their crews?

300 airboats can be cool, they are maneuverable, but probably too dang loud to be very useful for searching for survivors.

I don't agree at all... the airboat might be the perfect rescue boat. If you're worried about noise, and outboard motor makes noise too. But for pulling people off of rooftops or quickly transiting shallow floods, an airboat can't be beat.

I'd get as many of them as I could.

Well, if I figure my units right, such a fireboat would drain one hectare at a rate of 40cm/hour. If you only need to drain one hectare (e.g. because you put in a cofferdam around some particular area you need to drain) that may be a useful speed. But for dealing with the flood as a whole, quite useless.
