It might be possible to make some aerial inspections of the oil facilities south of the mouth of the Mississippi late today, although no crew can make it out there until tomorrow.

BP's Thunder Horse facility nearly capsized after it was evacuated for Hurricane Dennis. It took a much more direct hit from Katrina. We'll just see.

Jose lasted about 18 hours, IIRC. Popped up as a TS in the Bay of Campeche, then right into Mexico. Non event here.

I just heard from relatives in Leakesville which is east of Hattiesburg. They have a large tree down and their fence is missing, but no major damage.

WDSU still asking for Slidell residents to call in.

Worrisome.... none of the 30K residents has called yet?

Speaking of gamblers:

Closing coast casinos costs Miss. $500,000 a day in tax revenue

(Jackson, Miss.-AP) August 29, 2005 - Hurricane Katrina has dealt Mississippi's economy a major blow.
The powerful storm silenced slot machines and halted card games on the flashy casinos that dot the Gulf Coast.

The gambling houses are built on barges anchored just off the beach, and Governor Haley Barbour said during a midday briefing that emergency officials have received reports of water reaching the second or third floors of some casinos.

Barbour says there have been no reports of casinos breaking loose from moorings or having any other structural damage. It's unclear how long the gambling houses will remain closed.

Large industries, from shipyards to chemical plants, operate along the Mississippi and Alabama coastlines. Storm damage could delay production for days or weeks.

About 14,000 people work in the dozen casinos along the Mississippi coastline. Each casino has a land-based hotel, and thousands more work in those.

At Treasure Bay, a flashing sign said: "Closed due to Katrina. Katrina Go Away."

That will put it between Montgomery and B'ham. Our local station just announced that the airport here might have to close. They were advising everyone who has a flight out to check with the airlines or airport site. They also said we might have tornadoes plus wind and floods. We are on a high hill so that won't bother us but our basement always has water in it when we get a lot of rain. NW AL will get the worse rain, etc. The dividing line is I 65. I am worried about my family in northern MS. The line looked like it was going right over that area. My 101 year old mother is in a nursing home there.

Kenner flooding serious

Monday, 1:45 p.m.

Willliams Boulevard in Kenner is flooded north of I-10 to just before the lake levee, officials said.

Officials said the flooding appears to be more severe than seen on May 8, 1995. However, Lake Pontchartrain did not overtop levees. Throughout Williams and elsewhere in Kenner, businesses, homes and apartments are dealing with flooding and significant roof damage.

Chateau Boulevard is a zig-zag of trees and power lines blocking one of Kenner's main arteries.

There's always that disturbing delay in Hurricane damage reports . . . all seems fine, because everyone who's okay checks in and says "okay here" . . . but no news is not good news in the "quiet" areas . . . and the Media is very inept at getting the story out . . .
