Actually three refineries IIRC. I worked at the Murphy Refinery There a few years ago.

How do you raise an island? Does the former first floor of a house that survived the hurricane become it's basement?

They used dredges to pump sand in from the bay. Wooden homes were generally jacked up and stood above ground at the same location. Stone structures did have their 1st story become the basement.

I agree. This was especially scary, to me, knowing so little about it:

"The levee system in New Orleans is one of the most extensive in the world, but it is designed for a Category 3 hurricane maximum."

Quote "Anybody knows about a thread that might have been started to collect or direct on how to help victims. Other than the Red Cross?"

The Red Cross is taking care of THOUSANDS of people right now. As always they are in need of volunteers and donations.

Kenner flooding serious

Monday, 1:45 p.m.

Willliams Boulevard in Kenner is flooded north of I-10 to just before the lake levee, officials said.

Officials said the flooding appears to be more severe than seen on May 8, 1995. However, Lake Pontchartrain did not overtop levees. Throughout Williams and elsewhere in Kenner, businesses, homes and apartments are dealing with flooding and significant roof damage.

Chateau Boulevard is a zig-zag of trees and power lines blocking one of Kenner's main arteries.

What is a good local free-streaming site so that I can watch while I work?

but New Orleans has hardly been unscathed.

Oh... I agree with that of course. They were not "unscathed" at all. I just believe that this storm DID have the ability to make these dire predictions come true. Just most of its power went to the east a bit. It was VERY close to being everything forecast.

The Salvation Army. The Baptist relief is good too. I don't donate to the RC.

Exactly. And have milspec hardened technology to keep the signals coming. Amature web cams have done better then the networks early in the storm. (see links at top). With battery power and sat uplink you could do a great job with these.

Still no new data on the lake level.

Subscription is free. They issue a weekly report on various issues but mostly on security, war, threats, etc. As another Freeper mentioned, they're usually pretty good. When OIF was about to begin, they sent out an advisory well before the wires had the info.

WARNING: They'll deluge you with e-mail to try an get you to upgrade to a paid subscription.

I did not know that Corky's had a place in NO. They are native to our town. Anyone that can not live without Corky's can have it Fed Ex'd to them.

It is NEVER permissable to help yourself to other people's property.

Well, uh, I'd tend to agree with you, but there's this pesky 16th Amendment thing...

On a more serious note:
As a property owner, I'm willing to make the looters a deal. They can have whatever they can carry as long as they're willing to take a heavy dose of hot lead along with 'em.

A weather guy on ABC local said he thought the water backed up in the drain canals, and that's why there's flooding...In other words, maybe not due to overflow over levees.
