The house may be gone, but you're still here.

I'd say that's not a bad thing. Houses can be rebuilt but science has yet to figure out how to replace a person.

Not true.

If you're protecting the public good, you have the defense of public necessity. If you're protecting your own life or that of a third party, you have the defense of private necessity.

The diference amounts to, that in private necessity, you have to reimburse the owner, public necessity you don't.

How high can Lake Poncetrain go before overflowing the levies? The "real time link" shows it is 6.75" over normal in the lake center and rising fast. Anyone familiar with this area?

He's still alive. He had a little thing earlier but nothing major since then.

"After Charlie, some folks here in FL in more remote areas were without power for weeks.

Louisiana's a little slower on the infrastructure thing. I'm in a relatively large community in Louisiana, (Lafayette). We took the eye of Lillie in 2002, and my power was out for about three weeks.

"It's hard to believe, but I don't think there's been a reported fatality yet. Doesn't mean it hasn't happened, but I find it awfully encouraging so far."

I've only heard of 3 deaths so far - they were old people who died as a result of trying to moving them from NO to BR.

Homeland Security Chief Terry Ebbert estimates it may take a month to get power back to everyone in New Orleans.

Councilman Oliver Thomas said he had received 120 distress calls from people in the Ninth Ward trapped by the storm. He said crews can not get to these people until hurricane force winds cease, the guess for that time frame is about 2 p.m.

Karen Swensen reports that Charity Hospital lost its windows on the 4th floor and that patients are being huddled in the hallways.

Senator Walter Boasso of St. Bernard Parish says there is 12 feet of water in most of the parish, up to the second floor in many homes.

Reports of 3-4 feet of water in Lakeview.

Apartment building on Wright Avenue in Terrytown has collapsed with people inside, according to Jefferson Parish Sheriff Harry Lee. Rescue crews have not been able to get to the scene as of 9:30 a.m.

I can't get on the Mobile Register's website.

WPMI TV reports:

WPMI NBC 15 is temporarily off the air. We were broadcasting on generator power, but a lightning hit took us off the air. Tune in to LiteMix 99.9, 95 WKSJ and other clear channel stations.

WPMI has a blog from the newsroom here, but it doesn't say much about conditions outside. The last update:

8/29/05 - 9:58 a.m.

Wow...what a turn of events. Sandra, Jim and I have relocated to the Clear Channel Radio building on Broadcast Drive. We're taking part in Chris Smith and Mary Booth's broadcast that is going out over all Clear Channel radio stations. About an hour ago while we were on the air and under a tornado warning, our generator caught fire and shook the newsroom. Everyone in the building had just heard the tornado warning announced, so all the people upstairs were evacuated down to the level of the station that is partially underground. The end result is that everyone is safe, but the generator is shot and the station is powerless. I don't know how long we'll be here or how long the station will be off the air, but hopefully arrangements can be made to get us back on the air as soon as possible.

I'll update more when I can.

WKRG TV (CBS) has a live feed, if someone wants to monitor it.

I'll keep looking.

I would expect many more fatalities to be reported as the day and night progresses.
