Category 4 Hurricane Katrina is approaching landfall in Eastern Louisiana. At 4:00AM EDT the storm's center was about 90 miles south of New Orleans.

MSNBC: Biloxi: reports that some persons had been spotted on rooftops. Surge may have reached 20', but weather is improving. Low tide in 3-4 hours.
It's hard to believe, but I don't think there's been a reported fatality yet. Doesn't mean it hasn't happened, but I find it awfully encouraging so far.
No, you are wrong. The whole world does not stop because of a hurricane and there are plenty of news reports on the hurricane.
Just another way to temper what and when the public hears the news.
FreeRepublic is giving far better coverage of the hurricane and all other news IMHO.
It was a prime example of the media screening what the American public hears.
Chalmette underwater
Monday, 1:30 p.m.
Hurricane Katrina hammered the Lower 9th Ward and St. Bernard Parish, with residents telling tales of stranded people being plucked from their rooftops by passing boaters and flood waters as high as 12 feet well into Chalmette.
Residents fled the surging water, which quickly rose as the brunt of Katrina plowed ashore near eastern St. Bernard Parish.
Residents reported high water flooding such institutions as Rocky and Carlo's restaurant at the corner of St. Bernard Highway and Lloyd's Avenue. Others reported that homes on Campagna Drive were nearly underwater.
At Chalmette High School on Judge Perez Drive, officials had set up a shelter of last resort late Sunday. By Monday morning, the first floor of the high school was under water and the evacuees huddled in rooms on the second floor, reporting that they could only see rooftops of the surrounding homes.
The St. Bernard Parish government building, also on Judge Perez Drive, was said to have taken on 8 to 10 feet of water. The government building is in a stretch of the highway that comprises one of the parish's main economic centers, with a huge new Super Wal Mart nearby.

One unconfirmed report spoke of 40,000 homes flooded in St. Bernard Parish alone, just east of New Orleans.
There were no immediate reports of deaths or serious injuries, but casualties seemed certain
Reports say the holes are so big it reminds them of what opposing offensive linemen open up on the Saints defensive Line......so big a locomotive could run thru.
After watching FOX all night, they sure did dodge the bullet.
FOX made it sound like NO would have to be rebuilt on another site, oh, and the dead would be floating all over.
The coverage from FOX has been so dramatic. With the drama queen Geraldo leading the way.
