That's why when you pray for these things, you pray for those people too. When a storm gets diverted, it goes somewhere ELSE. That's just how it is unfortunately till Christ comes again.

my son, who is home on leave from Iraq, just called and checked in early from leave and volunteered to go to NO for relief duty.

Excellent! And with all the reports of looting in Kenner, a show of force is needed in the area right away.

I believe you just pray. Let God take care of the details. It may be His will or it may not be.
Lot's of damage here but would loss of life and injury have been greater if a direct hit? I don't know.

The USMC Duty officer said that he had a LOOOOOONG roster of Marines gearing up to go and help.

Hurrah for those Marines.

WWL: 10+" of rain in Slidell, storm still hasn't moved out (so can't get in there yet), winds now shifted from the S to W to from the NW (so would be driving the surge away from shore now.)

It's okay. Just a couple of holes. They moved people that were sitting under where the holes were leaking.

New Orleans did not dodge the bullet

Yeah they did. I imagine that next time even more fools will hang around New Orleans because they "survived the big one." Lord. I fear we are about to find out where the bullet actually did hit... along the MS coast where the worst of the storm went and where we aren't hearing anything at all.

The question is what part of the body to shoot at.

Don't tell Laz.

I am very proud. I am nervous for him (military police) and the potential for looters in NO scare me more than him in Iraq.

Why wouldn't a pump be able to operate, even with the roof off the building.

Lots of pump houses are fed power overhead via a weatherhead that penetrates the roof. If the roof lifted off, the utilities might not be in good shape.

I suppose you could call months of recovery, compared with years of recovery, "dodging the bullet."

The Superdome is still leaking, but it's manageable. It doesn't look likely that it will get any worse at this point.
