Charleston solved the looting problem by getting the word out that looters would be shot, not arrested.

Excellent. That's exactly what they should be doing during this, too.

Looters occupy that *special* place between pedophiles and those who prey on the elderly.

I like that can I quote you! Bottom of the "human" food chain indeed...

of course it is overhyped...it is the MSM!

Check out post 2952 and think if that is overhyping.

People are in danger of dying. That is no hype.

HC 9th Grade damage

Reports from Harrison Central 9th Grade School in North Gulfport are that three of four walls there have collapsed. Rescue efforts are in progress. There were about 100 people sheltered there.

They seem to be okay, albeit packed:

A convoy of Alabama State Trooper cruisers are going through downtown Foley, AL, per WKRG. Extensive damage from tropical storm-force winds, according to report.

I don't like the hype either. I think much of the media coverage is dictated by memeories of storm disasters before the 1970s.

What is different today? 1) Better communication and media coverage; 2) lessons learned; 3) improved building construction; 4) better envronment controls (levees, coastal improvements etc)

The likelihood of the doomsday scenarios is frankly very remote as long as residents continue to respect these storms and take reasonable precautions.

Now if NO had no levees or flood gates and people were continuing to congregate up and down Bourbon Street during the event; well then, who knows? But in the past people just didn't get adequate warning and that's why hundreds of people died.

Be nice if **AP Photo/Dave Martin** would help shelter these people, rather than just photo them "struggling to get to the Dome".

How? Offer them a lens cap to keep their bald spots dry?

Yep, that's a hurricane for you. When you've been through a few, all you can do when you hear these reports is GASP...feeling soooo sorry for those caught up in it. Praying for all those folks.

But National Hurricane Center Director Max Mayfield warned that New Orleans would be pounded throughout the day and that Katrina's potential 15-foot storm surge, down from a feared 28 feet, was still substantial enough to cause extensive flooding.

"I'm not doing too good right now," Chris Robinson said via cellphone from his home east of the city's downtown. "The water's rising pretty fast. I got a hammer and an ax and a crowbar, but I'm holding off on breaking through the roof until the last minute. Tell someone to come get me please. I want to live."

They should all be shot, quickly and without mercy, before the cops come and let them go free after a day or two.

Do you have a polar bear suit? :-)
