Hurricane Katrina Live Thread, Part VII
NOAA - NHC ^ | 28 August 2005 | NOAA - NHC

Posted on 08/28/2005 8:10:23 PM PDT by NautiNurse

Extremely dangerous Hurricane Katrina is bearing down on the North Central Gulf of Mexico and New Orleans metro area. New Orleans Mayor Ray Nagin conceded that as many as 100,000 inner-city residents didn't have the means to leave and an untold number of tourists were stranded by the closing of the airport. At this hour, people are still filing into the Superdome after security screening for weapons and contraband. National Guard have brought in 360,000 MRE (meals ready to eat) to feed the estimated 30,000 storm refugees in the Superdome.

Red Cross is on stand-by with the Salvation Army as well. Thousands are ready to be set in. EVERY ERV in the nation has been called to the Gulf Coast. The Red Cross expects this to be the greatest natural disaster they have ever responded to.

Hey, isn't there an update coming up at 1 AM? I remember Janice Dean saying at one point that there would be updates every two hours.

But I would NOT take I-10 over the Atchafalaya Basin. Once I got to Baton Rouge, or thereabouts, if I couldn't get a hotel there, I'd take a state road north into Mississippi.

Stay away from water, stay away from low areas. That includes anything west of Baton Rouge along I-10, although you can't tell that by looking at a map.

latest reson shows two wind maxes in the NE quad..and only 125 knots flight level..which is only 130 MPH surface winds...translation... the winds are coming down..two eyewalls are forming....unless they find higher winds soon the offical wind speed may be dropped....on the other hand the wind field of CAT 3 plus winds is likley getting bigger

I've just had a very bad vision of an aquatic hell as Katrina hits the NO area with cars and people stuck on the Causeway.

For the first time, I've just had a little shudder.

I think the mayor is still in denial.... or (since I live in a tourism-oriented-town) not wanting to scare off tourists by -- gasp -- giving them the truth!

all the staff members but one abandoned their nursing home patients

Good grief. Forget about laws that should cover that type of behavior, this is an example of bottom-feeder crud.
