Hurricane Katrina Live Thread, Part VII
NOAA - NHC ^ | 28 August 2005 | NOAA - NHC

Posted on 08/28/2005 8:10:23 PM PDT by NautiNurse

Extremely dangerous Hurricane Katrina is bearing down on the North Central Gulf of Mexico and New Orleans metro area. New Orleans Mayor Ray Nagin conceded that as many as 100,000 inner-city residents didn't have the means to leave and an untold number of tourists were stranded by the closing of the airport. At this hour, people are still filing into the Superdome after security screening for weapons and contraband. National Guard have brought in 360,000 MRE (meals ready to eat) to feed the estimated 30,000 storm refugees in the Superdome.

WOW! That would be terrifying for a young boy.

My youngest daughter and I were watching the Moore tornado move up I-44 when my son called from his fraternity and told us to get over there in their basement NOW! It was on the ground forever but went NW,N,NE of Norman but did clip part of Tinker where the barracks were.

I've been through a few hurricanes in SE VA, in some cases going on the air on the local talk radio station in the middle of the night just to keep people going. We kept the phone lines open and passed on reminders not to go sleep with candles burning, helped people who were frightened and had noone else to talk to, and passed on information about the storm itself. Invariable, people ended up trading recipes, whether it was for their favorite comfort food or the injured squirrel they found in the storm. (I know, but people get a weird sense of humor when their life has just been turned upside down.)

Food is an integral part of the coping process and should not be ignored.

My understanding is that it is built on a rise but I am not sure. I think it is above sea level. However, if the dikes keep water out, they will also keep water in due to rain so you have to consider the heights of the dikes also should that happen. This does not take into account that this mound that the dome is on will be battered by waves. But there is nothing we can do, they are committed to the plan they made. We just have to pray for them and hope they can stay calm inside and not panic.

Butter one side of bread.

Cover with brown sugar.

Sprinkle on ground cinnimon.

Place in toaster oven or under broiler until butter melts, bread toasts and the brown sugar darkens.

Allow to cool before eating to avoid injury to mouth and tongue.
