Hurricane Katrina Live Thread, Part VII
NOAA - NHC ^ | 28 August 2005 | NOAA - NHC

Posted on 08/28/2005 8:10:23 PM PDT by NautiNurse

Extremely dangerous Hurricane Katrina is bearing down on the North Central Gulf of Mexico and New Orleans metro area. New Orleans Mayor Ray Nagin conceded that as many as 100,000 inner-city residents didn't have the means to leave and an untold number of tourists were stranded by the closing of the airport. At this hour, people are still filing into the Superdome after security screening for weapons and contraband. National Guard have brought in 360,000 MRE (meals ready to eat) to feed the estimated 30,000 storm refugees in the Superdome.

There was a plan in place. Geesh. There have been plans in place for years now. FEMA made this a priority. There was poor leadership on the part of the mayor and his "men"

There has always been a "plan"

Pray harder.

Good advice for all of us, RobbyS. On that note, I'm REALLY going to get off this thread and go see what the latest reports are on the t.v. All of you in harm's way, will be in my thoughts and prayers. Goodnight all, chena

Funny that you pop up after nine months to defend the mayor.

I was just thinking about that today. What can he not do, where he is at now? It would really mess up the hippies plans, wouldn't it?

If they used the right models. I understand the levies are only designed to protect the city in case of a cat 3 hurricane. It eveidnetly cost too much to buoild for the worst case which, IAC, often cannot be anticipatred. The towers in NYC were designed to withstand a hit from a 707, I think, not planes as big as the ones that flew into it.

Power is proportional to velocity cubed.

Drag is proportional to velocity squared.

141 mph is twice as big a wind load as 100 mph.

No, he did not mention the nutria, but he did bluntly talk about idiots who refused to evacuate and say that they'll have a hard time collecting all the bodies that will be floating around. He also said that if anyone called, he'd try to get out to rescue them.

I wish we had more Harry Lees. That guy is great.

He's the giant Chinese guy turned bubba who takes his SWAT team out to shoot nutria at night with night vision goggles and sights.

I don't think oil prices will rise much due to the storm, production in the area is maybe 400K barrels per day. Futures are trading around 70 now, those take into account the predicted storm damage.

Now if a storm like this hit Arabia then we'd be talking $100 oil...

It's aluminum siding on that roof. I don't have a lot of confidence in that technology in a storm where a piece of straw can be shot into a tree. It won't just be wind flowing but a debris field too.

WWL interviewing a FEMA? official. Official says 26,000 at the Super Dome.

I talked to my daughter on the phone a little while ago. She said she had seen the college kids stuck down there on TV. She said, "You know, mom, I never before would have considered taking a ride with a stranger, but if I was in NO without a car and I saw what this storm looked like heading in on the radar, I'd be standing on the road with my thumb out and I'd get in any car, with anyone that offered to get me out of there."

I would be seriously disappointed in anyone who would turn a natural disaster for ALL Americans into a political issue.

Yet that is exactly what many in this thread have done.

The main thing I looked forward to when growing up was not having to answer to a parent ever again.

You must be a conservative. :-)

Yes. And an incredibly infuriating one according to my mom & dad.   ;o)

Well put -- Bloomberg is not very good (understatement). Makes you wonder about these guys.

OKC has had some terrific Mayors over the last ten years.
