Hurricane Katrina Live Thread, Part VII
NOAA - NHC ^ | 28 August 2005 | NOAA - NHC

Posted on 08/28/2005 8:10:23 PM PDT by NautiNurse

Extremely dangerous Hurricane Katrina is bearing down on the North Central Gulf of Mexico and New Orleans metro area. New Orleans Mayor Ray Nagin conceded that as many as 100,000 inner-city residents didn't have the means to leave and an untold number of tourists were stranded by the closing of the airport. At this hour, people are still filing into the Superdome after security screening for weapons and contraband. National Guard have brought in 360,000 MRE (meals ready to eat) to feed the estimated 30,000 storm refugees in the Superdome.

I've not seen Bush make a delivery anywhere near as bad as this guy's. Yes Bush does make verbal stumbles from time to time, but this guy just couldn't talk.

Yet we always say that a Bush's lack of speaking ability says nothing about his intelligence and his ability to lead.

The guy was just not that bad. If you want bad, try to remember Chief Moose in the sniper shootings the Atlanta Sherriff during the courthouse shootings.

You know you're in trouble when the natural gas mains break and the downed power lines ignite the gas *awhoom* and the howling wind blows it out, and this cycle repeats over and over again.

When the wind rips street signs loose from their metal poles and they go spinning through the air like lethal frisbies.

When the flooding water causes red ants, snakes, and rodents to seek shelter in your house.

If you are poor and don't own a car, or if you are elderly and can't drive, how does that make you an idiot? Are poor people supposed to die because they can't afford a car?

Sorry, but I just think that in the case of natural disasters a government is supposed to plan for the safety of all of its citizens, not just the smart ones and the ones who own cars. There are a whole lot of children in the Superdome, you know. Are they undeserving idiots, too?

I wonder if the N.O. radar installation will even survive the storm... IIRC, the Miami radar site was toppled during the wrath of Andrew.

Why do I get the feeling we have some Dems on this thread? Cannot feature anyone else defending the Mayor.

and I guess you think Morial was a better mayor?

as sustained winds of 150 mph with gusts of 200 blew through my parking lot. No cars moved; even my old slab sided '89 Jetta barely shook on her springs.

That's remarkable; out west it's not unusual for 60-70 MPH winds to overturn trucks and trailers on the highway -- especially on the lee slopes of the Rockies. I was directly behind a travel trailer when that happened.

I didn't take it that you were the only one praying...FEEPERS pray a lot. Let's hope that it works tonight!

FNC just said that three elderly people died, trying to get out of NO.

Talk, heck. When he was READING his prepared statement, he sounded like a student reading aloud in a remedial class.

Be infuriated at the idiocy of the citizens. Not the officials.

To some degree, you are correct. However, factor in the elderly and mentally incapacitated. Factor in the people without mode or means of escape. Factor in stupidity of "leaders" who did stuff like... oh, kept the Ponchatrain bridge traffic flow going in usual direction instead of opening both lanes to get OUT.

It was all so very odd to see the mayor stumble the way he did, because I had always heard that he was a significant improvement over the previous mayors. Had made some headway in cleaning up some of the corruption and improving the police force. But I agree that he made some major mistakes this time, that unfortunately will likely cost lives.

I bet the radar doesn't stand up with this storm either.

Eyewall replacement lasted 20 minutes according to Channel 2. Hurricane force winds go out 105 miles from the eye.
