Hurricane Katrina Live Thread, Part VI
NOAA - NHC ^ | 28 August 2005 | NOAA - NHC

Posted on 08/28/2005 2:38:16 PM PDT by NautiNurse

Extremely dangerous Hurricane Katrina is bearing down on the North Central Gulf of Mexico and New Orleans metro area. Thousands of people did not evacuate New Orleans. Outer bands of Katrina are reaching the Louisiana coast.

Due to the size and intensity of this storm, all interests in the North Gulf of Mexico should be in their safe locations.

Wouldn't a low yeild nuke break the storm up with little fallout...or do I need to adjust my tinfoil cap?

Past adjustment - get titanium.

A nuke would not make a dent; the heat might even feed the beast

Shep Smith looks as worried as I've ever seen anyone on TV news. Anchor said words to the effect, "We hope this tragedy doesn't unfold..." Shep interrupts, "You think YOU hope!" Talking about taking shelter in the center staircase of the hotel--I can't even imagine.

yep...

11 AM had it going into Florida. 5 PM is when it was in the area, 11 PM showed nearly a direct strike.

11 PM on a Friday. NO excuse for the Mayor, but I CAN see it as being a possible excuse for some of the people of New Orleans.

LOL! I'm in Mobile. Thought I was the only one who still had some "Dennis boards" up! Actually, the screws were stripped in one of the plywood planks covering the patio door..the top board. So it's still there, keeping the sun out on a normal day and now keeping Katrina out (we hope!). That's the only board we'll have....sure hope we're not being foolish. I just hate sitting in the dark when all the windows are boarded and the power goes off...yuk.

Best of luck to y'all. Days like this are the ONLY TIME I'm happy we no longer have our "bay house".

The dynamical model consensus from the National Hurricane Center had Kat moving anywhere between Appilachicola and NO. The path being quoted by the NHC was somewhere EAST of Pensacola.

Nope on the latter, go back and follow my links, I give a timeline with a supporting link of evidence for each. One of them was this one:

http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-news/1471043/posts?page=388#388

Look at the projected coordinates for the 4pm Friday bulletin from the NHC. One is 30.0, 88.5, which is just south of Pascagoula, MS and about 90 miles east of New Orleans.

If I was standing where Shep was, I'd be drinking too. Actually, I'm drinking anyway. LOL

Did I read correctly on here that no food is being provided in that shelter? ... I am LIVID!!!!

Mayor said early this morning that [GW]Bush would provide whatever is needed.

[In other words, they planned for nothing and now expect the Fed to take care of things. Mayoral interview early this morning (around 3 a.m.) reminded me of the typical dolt officials in the disaster movies who refuse to take precautions and remain in denial of the impending disaster, until it is almost too late.]

He's pretty shook up.
He realizes he is at the epicenter of destruction if things go the way they are planned.
Janice Dean mentioned he went there of his own accord, so she may be more upset at the prospect of losing her co-workers/friends, which is understandable.

If they bring in MRE's...they won't need porta-potties.

This is a serious time and I shouldn't be laughing, but that's funny.

My niece gained 20 lbs on MREs in Iraq.

If you open windows during a hurricane than the rain blowing sideways (wets your carpet) and also gets under your ceiling and helps lift off your roof. Think aerodynamics. The wind blowing OVER your roof is putting pressure DOWN on it much in the same way wind flowing over race cars help push them down on the track.

I think Shep had a drink in his hand on that last report!

Really? Nah....he wouldn't be drinking on the job....maybe it was a soft drink or iced tea (my favorite beverage.)

He does sound a little too laid back, but I suspect he merely has a slow metabolism.

It's a Norleans drawl.

According to the mayor they're going to be getting the waiting people into the floor of the Superdome, and process them from there, getting them out of the weather. A lot of good wet clothes and sleeping bags are going to do them if they have to stand out there in the rain waiting to be processed. So that's some good news, at least.

yeah the Mayor of NO didn't strike me as super duper sharp the other day either so this isn't a big surprise, but more of a confirmation :)
