Hurricane Katrina Live Thread, Part VI
NOAA - NHC ^ | 28 August 2005 | NOAA - NHC

Posted on 08/28/2005 2:38:16 PM PDT by NautiNurse

Extremely dangerous Hurricane Katrina is bearing down on the North Central Gulf of Mexico and New Orleans metro area. Thousands of people did not evacuate New Orleans. Outer bands of Katrina are reaching the Louisiana coast.

Due to the size and intensity of this storm, all interests in the North Gulf of Mexico should be in their safe locations.

I can't believe Geraldo actually got this weather recon guy to call in, we were joking about it earlier when he was bragging about waiting for their call!

"We're not looking for some place to put others down in a time of disaster."

But watch out for those times when there isn't a disaster, right Howlin?

I don't think they evacuated the patients.

No. I don't believe they had time.

I use Camillia red beans and mush up a cup after they cook for an hour. Makes a nice roux.

No, I don't have exact location on the apartment folks; the guys are out in the country in Ironton, or wherever they hunker down out in the country. But I appreciate the offer...

"The simplified expression for wind pressure can be written as:

q = c GC V (2)

where q is the wind pressure in pounds per square foot (psf), c is the air density term, G is the gust response factor, C is the pressure coefficient and V is the wind velocity in miles per hour (mph)." [emphasis added]

I asked this question a couple of hours ago and only got a response concerning the force of flood waters / storm surges: The Superdome has been described as being designed to withstand 200 MPH winds. Does the "200 MPH" wind contemplate the greater density present when air and large volumes of water are mixed [as would obviously happen in any hurricane] or just normal air with some humidity at standard pressures?

If you can't see the difference, you're not better than the rest of them.

While I will reframe from making any comment on God's judgements in this matter...because I am in no position to say...I will say this. We are mortal and look at life, as the scriptures say, darkly, through a glass. He sees us from an eternal perspective and so things we view as horrendous from that perspective may not be so viewed by God in His heaven who has our eternal view in mind.

Like a mother and father who punish a young child, be it spanking, or grounding, or otherwise...and from that child's perspective it is the end of the world....loving parents know it is not, that there are years of life ahead, and the lessons taught and learned by such an experience will benefit that same child in the years to come.

We are God's children and He views us similarly...with love...and there is an eternity before us that we do not comprehend, and rarely appreciate at this point.

That is not a psychosis, just an attempt to grasp that eternal perspective.

200 probably wasn;t overly extreme,
Nope.

Any civil engineers on board wanna go into the details (I don't have the time ATTM)?

I'm not a religious person. But if I ever thought I might wish to become religious, the "religious" folk who frequent FR have pretty well convinced me that that's the last thing I'd ever want to do.

Having said that, I'm still praying for those in the path of Katrina.

907MB... low pressure usually equates to a stronger storm.. Camile was 901MB and 200mph, Gilbert was 888MB..

"My point is that there are a lot of examples of the wrath of G_d in every religion, so if you have "religion" it would really be reasonable to see this in that context."

Why would you suggest that most religions rely on the wrath of God? Why would God be killing thousands of people of all faiths tomorrow with this storm?

My religion is not a feel good one - it relates Free Will and the fact that people can be evil.

907 millibars of air pressure. The lower the number the more powerful the storm is. 1012 is typical at sea level.
